Brendan Rodgers said he had never slept better heading into the heavyweight clash against Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday. Rodgers has spent the best part of three months ducking and diving from the questions about pressure and his sides title bid. Yet, when his team entered the raucous theatre of Anfield to another stunning rendition of Youll Never Walk Alone standing across from his side was the all too familiar opponent of Chelsea. It was Chelsea that had given Liverpool their toughest test in 2005 on the way to them winning a remarkable European Cup. It was Chelsea who was the last team to defeat Liverpool in the Premier League, back in December, and now it was Chelsea standing in front of the gates that guarded the path towards the Premier League trophy. Now, that is pressure. It could not have been scripted more perfectly. A former, true heavyweight in the game, whose level amongst the elite has slipped over the past two decades, now with a clear path towards a shock championship, if only they can get past the powerhouse in blue. It was at Chelsea, of course, where Rodgers worked on his craft under Jose Mourinho and now it had come full circle, a chance for the pupil to defeat the teacher on the grandest of stages. Up until now, even against Manchester City earlier this month, Liverpool had played with a reckless abandon, punching holes in defences and predictions, while gathering more and more believers that they could do what was thought to be impossible just five months ago. Their journey had guided them closer and closer to the pinnacle. With three games left, Liverpool needed just seven points from their last nine to win it all, and with Crystal Palace and Newcastle to come, there was no more hiding from the facts, no matter what Rodgers said. Dont lose to Chelsea and the title should be yours. Despite what Jose would want you to believe, this was no minnow facing up to the Reds as Chelsea picked a team that they had paid over 100 million pounds to assemble. Inside the tight, organised system drawn-up by Mourinho, the visitors were exactly as expected. Liverpools breathless starts had catapulted them to within touching distance of glory but on this bright, sunny afternoon they werent allowed to sprint out of the box.    Chelsea sat deep and allowed them to have a lot of the ball but with it the home team suddenly looked a side that carried extra weight. The weight of expectation can get very heavy on a footballers shoulder. With every pass, the Liverpool players had an extra thought. The brilliantly organized visitors closed the space and with it the punches, so ruthlessly delivered in past games by Liverpool, were missing. Raheem Sterling was Liverpools brightest player in the first half. How refreshing it is to see a young Englishman appreciate space as much as he does. Still, Liverpool probed but if Chelsea were on the ropes they were hanging out by them comfortable at taking the punishment. Branislav Ivanovic, back at Anfield after Luis Suarez took Mike Tyson style bite out of him last April, was magnificent leading Chelseas back four. Young Tomas Kalas could not have asked for a better partner to learn from on his Premier League debut. Gary Cahill and John Terry have been excellent this season but the Serbian defender reads the game superbly and, contrary to the English defenders, never loses his cool. Cesar Azpilicueta, back to his more comfortably right back slot, was excellent and both he and Ashley Cole looked like full backs who had been sent out to do a specific job, narrowing the back four and inviting Liverpool to stretch the field and take the ball where they didnt want to. It had been over seven months since Liverpool had played 45 Premier League minutes at home without scoring and as the half-time whistle grew nearer, at 0-0, tension started to creep in at Anfield. Then the creeping exploded. When Steven Gerrard received the ball in front of the Kop he made one small mistake, miscontrolling it, then a bigger one, slipping to retrieve it, and then the rope-a-dope was on as Demba Ba sprinted in alone to deliver a knockdown punch. One nil Chelsea. It was a scene from Liverpools not so distant past, one that wouldnt have been out of place last season when many a team would come in and force a maturing Liverpool into a mistake. It was those mistakes that helped Liverpool learn and progress but even they had been stunned with such a rapid climb that had brought them so tantalizingly close where suddenly those mistakes were far more costly than when the likes of Downing, Carroll and Adam were on the payroll. Such progression meant they now had to face up to something they hadnt really seen. Adversity. And it was delivered in the cruelest of manners with Gerrard, the catalyst for so much of their success this season, falling to his knees in the middle of his favourite place on earth. There was a second half still to play but Liverpool never looked the same. They had never been behind for longer than 35 minutes since their last game against Chelsea but once again that total was overtaken against the familiar foe. Suarez had a shot well saved and Joe Allens volley almost went in but Chelsea were resilient throughout, delivering a true knock-out punch just before the final bell when Willian tapped home. An under-the-weather Mourinho sprinted down the touchline again while Rodgers crossed his arms and looked on. Chelsea had done the double on Liverpool when many teams couldnt even beat them once.  Liverpools fans headed to the exits heads full of emotions about the title race, knowing the title was still in reach but now out of their hands. They will feel they can get to 86pts with two remaining wins but Man City, all too familiar with winning leagues on goal difference, can now get to that mark as well and should if they can finally get over a huge hurdle for that club and win at Goodison Park next week. Chelsea, still two points behind Liverpool, are likely out of the race but, once again, showed a team what you have to become to be winners. Without Petr Cech, John Terry, Ramires, Eden Hazard, Samuel Etoo and others, they had shown the style and character it takes to succeed in the biggest of games. Liverpool are rightfully anxious to win the league because it has been over two decades since they last did so, but, equally, they should be anxious knowing that a giant powerhouse, supposedly in transition, are getting stronger by the week. This was a weaker Chelsea yet still they set the standard you must match to be champions. They will, likely, spend many more future sunny Sundays in late April wrapping up title bids rather than ripping up those of their opponents. Sleep well, Brendan. You may never have a better chance than right now. Derrick Favors Jersey . - Mike Zimmer has brought a demanding style to the Minnesota Vikings. Alex Killorn scored the eventual game-winner 1:16 into the third period, and Brenden Morrow and Nikita Kucherov added insurance goals for the Lightning, who won all three games on their homestand. Killorn and Ryan Callahan each tallied a goal and an assist for the Lightning. David Legwand scored Ottawas lone goal and Robin Lehner made 28 saves on 32 shots against. The Senators have lost four of their last five. Tampa Bays top line gave the Lightning their first lead early in the third. Anton Stralman fired a shot toward Lehner, and Killorn reached around defenseman Erik Karlsson to get his stick in position for the deflection to tally his seventh of the season. Weve got a pretty dynamic bunch, said Lightning coach Jon Cooper. When were pushing the pace, we can get some things done. Morrow scored his first of the season later in the period to give Tampa Bay some insurance. He found a soft spot in the defense right in front of Lehner and Cedric Paquette found him with a pass from behind the net. Halfway through the period, a double-minor gave Tampa Bay a four minute power play and a chance to seal the win. A Senators turnover to Steven Stamkos gave him a great chance in the slot, but Lehner made a tough save to preeserve the two-goal deficit.dddddddddddd With time winding down in the 5-on-4 advantage, Tyler Johnsons shot from the top of the circle was deflected by Kucherov into the top corner of the net for the 4-1 lead. Against good teams, you need a full 60 minutes, said Lehner. Ottawa started the scoring with less than two minutes remaining in the first period. On its first power play, Legwand scored his third of the season when he received a pass from Karlsson at the top of the circle and wristed one through traffic past Bishop. Callahan scored his 11th of the season early in the second period. Killorns hard work along the boards in the defensive zone sprung Stamkos on a 2-on-1 with Callahan. Stamkos found Callahan on a pass across the slot and the latter one-timed the puck to the back of the net to tie the game. MALMO, Sweden -- Ticket packages have nearly sold out in Toronto and are more than 50 per cent sold in Montreal for the 2015 world junior hockey championship. The tickets went on sale Dec. 30 and are selling fast, said Pat McEleney, executive director of the 2015 and 2017 world juniors, which will both be held in Montreal and Toronto. "Were excited about where we are," said McEleney. Hockey Canada is looking to set attendance records and reap record profits by holding the event in Canadas two largest cities. In 2015, Canada will play its round-robin games as well as a quarter-final at the 21,273-seat Bell Centre before moving to the 18,819-seat Air Canada Centre in Toronto for the medal round. Toronto will also host the five-team round-robin group that Canada is not in. Canada will start the 2017 event in Toronto, with the other group and the medal round in Montreal. They hope to fill the rinks for games Canada is not involved in as well. Ticket package holders who dont want to use some games can re-sell or donate the tickets back to organizers for resale or distribution to minor hockey teams. Sales of those tickets are expected to begin in the fall. "Its important to us to have full buildings," said McEleney. "Its important to the event and to other teams coming to Canada." He said they hope to make at least $22 million in profit in 2015, which will be used to fund hockey programs across the country. Co-hosts Calgary and Edmonton set the world junior attendance record of 444,718 in 2012 and earned $21 million in profit. Sales have been slower in Montreal because the medal round tends to sell more quickly than round-robin games, said Marie-Christine Boucher, general manager for the Montreal side of the event. TSN Baseball Insider Steve Phillips answers several questions each week. This week, topics include the "bean wars" between the Red Sox and Rays, Blue Jays draft pick Jeff Hoffman, Justin Verlanders struggles, and surprising all-star voting results. 1) In light of the “bean wars” between Tampa Bay and Boston, what should the league do to reduce the number of retaliatory on-field incidents? Are the suspensions enough of a deterrent? Major League Baseball has reduced the number of on-field violent confrontations in a pretty significant way from the 1980s and before.  The issuing of warnings to teams after a potentially intentional beaning has reduced the number of retaliatory responses.  As we saw in the Rays/Red Sox series, boys will still be boys but it is better now than it used to be.  Baseball also has a “heads up” program where umpires are alerted prior to a series about any bad blood that exists between the teams.  Umpires can issue warnings before a game if they believe the lingering animosity could surface.  This pregame warning serves as a deterrent and puts players on notice that at the first sign of monkey business there will be action taken.  There are two changes that I would make to further address this issue.  Firstly, I would encourage umpires to eject the instigator in a bean ball situation.  Too many times the pitcher who strikes first suffers no penalty.  Rays pitcher Davis Price hit Res Sox slugger David Ortiz with a pitch that may have been intentional.  The umpire chose to only issue a warning to both teams. That was done with the intent of heading off possible retaliation against the Rays. That warning didnt work and Brandon Workman, Red Sox pitcher, was later ejected for throwing a pitch behind Rays third baseman Evan Longoria. If Price had been ejected, then the Red Sox would not have felt as compelled to bean Longoria for payback.  Price didnt get a suspension at all. Second, I would institute a “no third-man in” policy.  If there is a fight on the field, no other player can leave his position on the field or in the dugouts and bullpen.  If they do then they face an automatic 10-game suspension. This should serve as a team deterrent that will keep all-out brawls from occurring. Thirdly, I propose that penalties become stiffer for the initial combatants as well.  If you fight, you know you will serve at least a five-game suspension for a position player and relief pitcher and a 15-game suspension for a starting pitcher.  It would be great to end all on-field violence.  It wont ever happen but these changes would get us a bit closer. 2) The Blue Jays used the ninth-overall draft pick on Jeff Hoffman on Thursday; a player who just underwent Tommy John surgery. What does this say about the Jays development strategy, especially in light of Alex Anthopoulos drafting habits in the past? The Blue Jays have been drawn to the high-ceiling type players in the first round under Anthopoulos.  They have shot for the moon.  They want impact from their first round pick.  Nowadays, many teams like predictability in first round selections.  They will take less impact and a lower ceiling for a greater likelihood that the player will get to the majors.  Not the Jays. Jeff Hoffman was thought to be one of the top three picks in this draft prior to injuring his arm and undergoing Tommy John surgery.  This selection makes a statement on so many levels.  First, the Jays believe that Hoffman is an extraordinary talent.  Why else would any team take a baseball player whose injury prohibits him from doing what he does best?  Secondly, the Jays believe in Tommy John surgery.  It isnt quite as predictable as getting ones tonsils removed but the track record of success is very good.  The Jays fully expect Hoffman to be 100 %.  Thirdly, the Jays are saving money.  Hoffman is a value because they took him with the ninth pick when many thought he could go as high as second overall.  With the injury, the Jays will likely save some money but they are also assuming some level of risk and that has dollar value. With multiple first round selections, the Jays gave themselves the financial flexibility to get their picks signed this year. The fact that Hoffman is a college pitcher means that he is a bit more advanced in his development than if he were a high school pitcher and therefore missing some playing time now should not set his development back much at all.  3) Justin Verlanders 2014 numbers have been less than inspirational. Hes 6-5 on a first-place club, has an ERA over 4.00, is presently sporting the worst WHIP of his career, and hasnt logged a complete game since 2012. Should the alarm bells be going off for the Tigers? The Tigers should be alarmed about Justin Verlander.  He is still a good pitcher but the dominant overpowering ace from a few years back is no longer on their roster.  Verlander has thrown 1,885 innings in eight and a half years, which includes seasons of 251, 240, and 238 innings pitched in individual seasons. He has thrown the most pitches in baseball this year. In fact, he has thrown the most pitches in baseball since 2009. He has led the league in pitches thrown every year but one from 2009-2014. In 2010 he finished four pitches behind Dan Haren for second most. Verlander is a workhorse. He loves to go deep in the game and he loves to strike out hitters.  He has been an amazing pitcher. The fact that he has such great stuff is a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing because he has won a ton of games for Detroit.  It is a curse because he has been so good that he works deep counts since he strikes out so many hitters.  And he has always been a better option for the manager than anyone in the bullpen, so he pitches deeper in the game. All of this has taken a toll.  He is wearing down a bit.  We have seen CC Sabathia fall off over the past couple of years because of the same reasons.  The arm only has so many bullets and they have both used their fair share.  Verlander can still be successful, but he is going to have to make adjustments.  Command has to be more important than velocity for him.  He used to regularly run his fastball into the high 90s.  He no longer can pitch there.  If he tries to generate too much velocity from delivery, his command suffers.  Verlander needs to try and retire hitters on three pitches or less with well-located pitches.  Velocity cant matter.  This will allow him to be more efficient now and give him more years on the back end of his career.  4) The most recent All Star vote tally had some very interesting results.  Torontos Melky Cabrera, is ranked third among AL outfielders in voting.  Orioles designated hitter, Nelson Cruz, passed Red Sox slugger David Ortiz for the top DH.  Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun is in a close race in the NL outfield as well.  Why are these results so significant?  All three of these players have served suspensions for performance enhancement drugs. Yet, the fans seem to be putting that aside as they consider their performances this year.  The fans believe that what they are seeing on the field is legitimate and real. They dont think it is enhanced.  It is just good ol fashioned baseball.  The All Star balloting has long been a popularity contest.  The fans votes dont always coincide with the players votes or the stats.  If the fans like a certain player, he has a shot to be an all-star regardless of his numbers.  What is even more amazing is that the fans arent holding grudges like they have in the past.  It had seemed that fans wanted to send a message to cheaters that their actions were unacceptable.  One of the few ways they could do that was with their voting.  But that feeling seems to be waning.  Fans are either forgiving the players for past wrongs or just accepting of what has happened to the game. Either way, we all win. I have learned that giving forgiveness is not for the other person but it is for me.  When I forgive someone they may react in any number of ways.  But when I give forgiveness it releases a burden on me. I no longer feel pain and resentment.  Baseball fans are showing healthy growth by surrendering their anger to baseball players.  It shows growth.  It shows a certain trust in the drug policy.  It shows compassion and understanding. My hope is that baseball writers will take the lead of the fans.  Writers feel duped by players.  They feel like they were made fools of for celebrating home runs and record-setting accomplishments.  They resent it and dont ever want to get burned that way again.  My hope is that the writers will move to a place of forgiveness of the players as well.  It is time to move forward.  The writers need to look at the steroid era as just that, an era.  It wasnt done to them.  It was just what happened and they were there to document it.  So they should document it.  Vote steroid users in the Hall of Fame.  Lets appropriately remember what happened so we dont repeat our mistakes.  The writers should make history by passing that history forward.  It is time to heal. It is the right thing for all of us that made mistakes in the steroid era of baseball.  So let this day start the all-out campaign for Melky Cabrera, Nelson Cruz and Ryan Braun for the All Star team! Kawhi Leonard scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and Manu Ginobili also added 15 points to help the Spurs win for the fourth time in five games. Without Bryant, the Lakers allowed San Antonio to open the game with a 9-0 lead. Duncan hit shots on back-to-back possessions, and Parkers jumper following a Duncan block extended the lead to nine. Clarkson got the first Los Angeles bucket 3 1/2 minutes into the game. The Spurs went on a 10-0 run with five points from Leonard later in the quarter to go up 25-8 and led 31-15 after one period. Los Angeles would not pull within single digits for the remainder off the game.dddddddddddd. We feel good that we played at a good pace on a back-to-back, said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. San Antonios lead fluctuated between 16-23 points on its way to a 56-38 lead at the break. Despite missing all five 3-point attempts in the quarter, the Spurs shot 50 percent and never allowed the Lakers to gain ground. Despite poor Spurs shooting in the third quarter, the Lakers were still unable to pull within single digits, and San Antonio took a 76-61 lead into the final period. Wesley Johnsons 3 cut San Antonios lead down to 10 points with 10 minutes to play, but a 7-0 Spurs run ended the Lakers comeback chances. Ginobili immediately responded with an acrobatic layup at the other end, and Patty Mills triple not even a minute later extended San Antonios advantage to 17 points. Game Notes Los Angeles fell to 2-7 without Bryant in the lineup ... The Spurs improved to 9-5 in the second game of a back-to-back ... Lakers point guard Jeremy Lin was a healthy scratch ... The Spurs improved to 7-0 when holding their opponent below 40 percent shooting ... San Antonio outrebounded the Lakers, 52-40 ... The Spurs won the season series, 2-1. ' ' '

TORONTO - Forward Kelly Russell will lead a balanced Canadian side at the IRB Womens Rugby World Cup in Paris this summer. The 27-year-old captain from Bolton, Ont., one of 26 women named to coach Francois Ratiers roster Monday, will be looking to erase the memories of a disappointing sixth-place finish at the 2010 tournament. The Canadian womens best result is fourth, achieved at the 1998, 2002 and 2006 tournaments. Other returning veterans of the 2010 tournament are Kim Donaldson, Mandy Marchak, Barbara Mervin, Julia Sugawara, Brittany Waters and Julianne Zussman. Five or six players were unavailable for selection due to injury or sevens commitments. "This is the 26 best players we had available," said Ratier, who took over the Canadian women in March 2013. "My goal at the beginning was to have a balanced squad between veterans and new players — experience and fresh minds," he added. "At the end, thats what I have." The youngsters include 19-year-old fly half Emily Belchos. New Zealand has won the last four womens World Cups, beating England in the final of the last three tournaments. Canada can take confidence from staying close to the Black Ferns in 33-21 and 16-8 losses on tour in June. "We were pretty pleased about the performance in New Zealand," said Ratier. "But we didnt show everything. So we keep some surprises, maybe. Well see. "We are not so far (behind). In a World Cup, in one game, you never know." Russell plays No. 8 at the back of the scrum, one of several positions that Ratier considers the spine of his team. The others are hooker (Donaldson and Mary-Jane Kirby), scrum half (Stephanie Bernier), fly half (Belchos is one of several contenders) and fullback (Elissa Alarie). "She (Russell), for me, is the centre of this spine — because of her experience, the way she leads and the good communication between her and I" said Ratier. Russells younger sister Laura is also on the World Cup roster. The 12-team tournament runs Aug. 1-17 in France. Canada has been placed in Pool A with Spain, Samoa and England. Canada opens against Spain, a team it beat at the 1991 and 2006 World Cups, on Aug 1 before facing Samoa on Aug. 5 and England on Aug. 9. Canada has never played Samoa. The Canadian women beat a young England squad 27-13 last summer but lost 30-3 when they met again last November. Only the three pool winners and the best-placed runner-up team advance to the semifinals. "Obviously in our pool, England is the favourite," said Ratier. "Its a fact. So it forces us to win and score a lot of points against Spain and Samoa." Ratier, a native of France who came to Canada 11 years ago and now makes his home in Montreal, has also coached the Rugby Club de Montreal (2003-2008), Concordia University (2007-2008) and the Quebec provincial team. He was also technical director of the Quebec Union and assistant coach with The Rock and Canada ‘A in 2009. In addition, he has worked with the Canada U-17 mens side. The Canadian women will gather for a one-week training camp in France prior to the tournament. FIVE HOOPS THOUGHTS: 1. MATTHEW DELLAVEDOVA (Cavs): This young man really impresses me. Shoots the three, passes it, tough as nails, supremely confident and a very good defender. Terrific second unit glue guy. Did a wonderful job for his team on Tuesday. No back down from him whatsoever in Kyle Lowry matchup last night. 2. RAPS AT QUARTER POLE (16-6): Gotta be pleased with 60 games to go. I like this team. This is a good team that can potentially be very good. They are only 3-3 without DeMar DeRozan - they really missed him in the fourth quarter last night. Schedule has been favourable and look at the next six games they play (New York, twice / Indy / Orlando / Brooklyn / Detroit) - all games that they have a shot in. Its a big six-game stretch that without DeRozan they have to develop a new winning identity as a group before the schedule turns absolutely brutal (Road Games at Chicago, Clippers, Denver on a back-to-back, Portland, Golden State and Phoenix). Big challenges are ahead. After 22 games when I evaluate this team in spite of their record, they are in the same tier as Washington and Atlanta (and are 3-0 versus those squads) in the East while I still put (if totally healthy) Cleveland and Chicago (Raptors are 1-3 against those opponents) as the teams to beat in East. With all due respect to Chuck Hayes and Tyler Hansbrough, Raps still lack that fourth big man to provide consistent rebounding, shot blocking and a bit of offensive punch. There are also questions of consistency at the 3-spot with Terrence Ross - but hes improving. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out here over the next few weeks without DeRozan. Overall, this team is close. How close? Hard to tell yet if that window is truly open to make the run at winning the Conference. You need to win three rounds (12 games) in brutally hard-fought matches to do that and in order to do that they probably need another legit guy to do it. Love the patient building approach of management and coaches - they know theyre improving yet not there yet. As you go along - thats the toughest decision to make - when do you know that Window of Opportunity is truly open? Theyre on the right path yet still have a challenging road to travel. Fun start - enjoying it and hopeful that they can continue improving. The games are a lot more fun, thats for sure. 3. TONY ALLEN (Grizzlies): Team is having an awesome season yet this guy never gets enough credit. Hes an adequate offensive guy but man, this dude competes and guards you every step of the way. Hes a stopper and in this league youve got to have a wing who can stand up to great offensive players and make them at least earn their points. He does that and does it quite well. 4. JOSH MCROBERTS (Heat): His former club (Hornets) really misses him and it was nice to see his line last night at Phoenix (10 and 4, 7 assists). Hes been banged up and now starting to find his groove. Tremendous passer, sound shooter and rebounder. Overall good complementary player who makes the right plays. Hell be a guy to keep an eye on now that hes healthy. 5. GREG MONROE (Pistons): Have always liked his game. Smart and fundamentally sound player. Averaging close to 15ppg and over nine boards a game for a struggling squad. Hes a free agent at end of season and it will be interesting to see what Stan Van Gundy and Jeff Bower decide to do with him. Do they trade him for an asset or just use the cap space if he walks at end of year? Do teams roll the dice and try to get a rental player for the stretch run and take their chances re-signing him? Good player to keep an eye on. Fascinating to see how it will play out. Air Force 1 Discount . Listen to the Raptors vs. Jazz live tonight on TSN Radio 1050 at 9pm et/6pm pt. Check out todays trade-related reports and speculation from around the NHL beat, including breaking news around the New York Rangers plans for captain Ryan Callahan. Blue-shirt biddingsTSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger tweeted Friday that Western Conference teams are suggesting the New York Rangers are collecting information on St. Louis Blues forward Chris Stewart. With rumours swirling around pending unrestricted free agent Ryan Callahan, Dreger tweeted "Callahan for Stewart would be a sweet deal for Blues. On Wednesday, Dreger said he was told that "Rangers general manager Glen Sather has reached out to a number of general managers and he is gauging trade interest on Callahan." The Rangers captain is in the final season of a three-year, $12.825 million deal. He has nine goals and 20 points in 38 games. Rapid responseColorado Avalanche forward P.A. Parenteau has found himself front and centre of trade rumours with the Montreal Canadiens. Talking to Mike Chambers of the Denver Post on Sunday, Parenteau addressed his current situation with the Avalanche and the potential for a move to Montreal. "Any time a top-six guy on a team is out of the lineup (rumours) are going to go around. Its parrt of the game, but its not fun with family and stuff like that.dddddddddddd Its Montreal, too, and everyone was calling me. But Im trying to block that out and wait for my turn," he said. Parenteau, 30, is in the second season of the four-year, $16 million contract he signed with the Avalanche as an unrestricted free agent in 2012. Patiently waitingThomas Vanek is close to making a decision on his future with the New York Islanders, or so his agent says. Steve Bartlett, who spoke to Newsdays Arthur Staple on Wednesday, said the Austrian winger is not quite ready to seal his fate, but that "we continue to have what I consider very good and constructive conversations with the Islanders." The Islanders acquired Vanek last October from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Matt Moulson, a conditional first-round pick in 2014 -- New York could defer the pick to next year if it is a top-10 selection -- and a second-round pick in 2015. "We certainly understand the team will want to explore [a trade] and try to recoup some of the assets they gave up," Bartlett said. "We are getting close to that line in the sand time and we understand the risks and rewards of the situation were in. (GM) Garth (Snow) and the Islanders have been nothing but great in this whole process." ' ' '

CHICAGO - White Sox ace Chris Sale says he feels fine after throwing 50 pitches in a simulated game. Sale is on the disabled list because a strain in a flexor muscle near his left elbow. Sale worked out Saturday and is on track to return in two weeks. The left-hander didnt experience any soreness and is expected to make his return for Chicago sometime during a four-game series against the New York Yankees that begins on May 22. "This particular scenario, they are really taking their time with it," he said. Sale will likely make two rehab starts before his major league return. Sale is 3-0 with a 2.30 ERA. He hasnt been in a game since throwing a career-high 127 pitches against Boston on April 17. Tennessee denied Mercer a second straight upset in decidedly one-sided fashion, routing the Bears 83-63 in the third round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday night behind 17 points and a career-high-tying 18 rebounds for Jarnell Stokes. Josh Richardson had a career-high 26 points and Antonio Barton had 18 for the 11th-seeded Vols (24-12), who are making the most of their first tournament appearance since 2011. "NIT two straight years, I guess thats what youd call starting from the bottom," Stokes said. "A lot of people doubted us, and that just makes the ride much better." The Tennessee band had plenty of chances to blare their beloved "Rocky Top" during this rout, which followed the same script as their 19-point thumping of Massachusetts two days earlier: The Voles outrebounded Mercer 41-19 to keep the Southeastern Conference perfect in the tournament. They joined Florida and Kentucky in the regional semifinals -- the first time three SEC teams made it that far since 2007. "Ive been hearing that the SEC has been a football conference for a long time but I dont know how you can still say that when youve got three SEC schools in the Sweet 16," Tennessee guard Jordan McRae said. Tennessee will face second-seeded Michigan (27-8) in a Midwest Regional semifinal Friday night in Indianapolis. Stokes broke his 2-day-old school tournament record for rebounds. Langston Hall had 15 points to lead the 14th-seeded Bears (27-9). They knocked off Duke in the signature upset of the tournament but couldnt answer Tennessees size. "I think hopefully by the time (reality) sets in, well all be able to put a smile on and realize that what weve been able to do at our school, and for the city, has been phenomenal," forward Jakob Gollon said. "Its kind of hard to see right now." Mercer trailed by double figures for the entire second half before the Bears threatened another fantastic finish. They had the ball down 12 with about 2 1/2 minutes left when Gollon -- one of the heroes of the Duke upset two days earlier -- threw the ball away in the lane, then fouled out a few seconds later. McRae hit two free throws, and Richardson added a ffast-break layup to push the Tennessee lead to 77-61 with 1 1/2 minutes left.dddddddddddd McRae finished with 13 points for the Volunteers, who have won eight of nine with the only loss coming to the top-ranked Gators in the SEC tournament. They are in the round of 16 for the fourth time in eight years, and the third team to go from the First Four to the Sweet 16 since the introduction of the extra round in 2011. They also got a bit of payback: Mercer ended Tennessees season last year with a 75-67 win in the first round of the NIT. Ike Nwamu scored 12 points, Anthony White Jr. had 11 and big man Daniel Coursey added 10 for Mercer, the plucky Atlantic Sun Conference school trying to match Florida Gulf Coasts run last year to the regional semifinals. The Bears drew a perfect matchup for their first game -- and couldnt have had a worse one for their second. "Any time we have Jeronne (Maymon) and Jarnell wearing Tennessee orange," McRae said, "we always feel like we have the advantage." They were bigger, more experienced and more precise than a Duke team loaded with high school All-Americans and a leaky defence, carving them up down the stretch in a 78-71 victory that ranks among the top upsets in the history of the tournament. Mercer starts five seniors and has seven on the roster -- but the Bears were down one with 6-foot-11 Monty Brown out with a possible concussion. Even with him, a Tennessee team with Stokes -- who set the schools short-lived tournament record with 14 rebounds in that 86-67 rout of UMass -- was going to be a challenge. Without him, it was nearly impossible. "Its hard to match up with them, but at the end of the day, mainly it was probably my fault towards the end," Coursey said. "They had a lot of rebounds, and I should have boxed them out." Tennessee never trailed and held a 24-4 rebounding advantage in the first half. Richardson scored 10 straight points midway for the Volunteers to turn a tight game into a double-figure lead. His 3 from the right wing made it 29-18 with 6 1/2 minutes left. Meanwhile, Stokes and Maymon effectively turned Mercer into a jump-shooting team: The Bears managed just one offensive rebound in the first half and didnt attempt their first free throw until there was just 8:40 left. Troy Tulowitzki just hopes no one will hold any grudges when he picks the National League participants for the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game. The Colorado Rockies shortstop will serve as captain of the NL side and select the four other members for the derby. Jose Bautista of the Toronto Blue Jays is in charge of the American League. "To be the captain, I dont know if thats something Im looking forward to because of how tough the decisions are going to be," Tulowitzki said Monday before the Rockies played the St. Louis Cardinals. "You cant put everybody that wants to participate on your team. So with that, you open yourself up. "But, at the same time, Im honoured to be the National League captain." The event will be held July 14 at Target Field, the night before the showcase game in Minneapolis. Bautista is a two-time major league home run champion. Tulowitzki has hit at least 25 homers in three of the past four seasons. Although the honour was just recently bestowed on Tulowitzki, hes already mulling over his options. Giancarlo Stanton of Miami is high on his list, especially since he leads the league in homers with 20. Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers is also a consideration. Tulowitzki may even select teammate Justin Morneau, especially since the first baseman came up in the Twins organization and it would be a homecoming. "That would be neat for him," said Tulowitzki, who has 18 homers this season. "Obviously, hes a guy I have a relationship with." Given Tulowitzkis relationship with St. Louis outfielder Matt Holliday, he could be a pick, too. Tulowitzki spent some time catching up with his former teammate before Mondays game. Did Holliday lobby to be included? "I dont think so," Tulowitzki said, smiling. "Holliday is just a good friend of mine, someone that I have a great deal of respect for. "If he wanted to participate, hed definitely be someone on the list, but he wasnt (lobbying)." Tulowitzki is hoping players around the NL reach out to him. Rockies pitcher Brett Anderson, whos currently on the disabled list, wrote on his Twitter account: "Fingers crossed Tulo picks me for the home run derby!" Hes listening -- and doesnt want to hear excuses about how the derby may mess up a batters stroke. "You take a look during (batting practice), sometimes Ill go out there and try to hit a home run on every single pitch," Tulowitzki explained. "Its no different from being in the Home Run Derby. "Those are my thoughts. I dont really want to entertain that thought, either. You get back on track. And if youre not doing good, you put some (work in the cage). Its not because of a Home Run Derby." Paul George Jersey . This is not some token job for a prominent, popular former player. All of those areas need a lot of work, so Molitor is going to be busy. Josh Baileys goal with 1:40 left capped a furious third-period rally, and the Islanders edged the Penguins 4-3 on Friday night.NEWARK, N.J. -- Marshawn Lynch was there. He even talked a bit. Then he was gone, cutting short his Super Bowl media day appearance after 6 1-2 minutes. And then he was back, albeit to the side of the "mixed zone" the NFL created for players not on podiums or in microphone-equipped speaking areas at the Prudential Center. But this time he wasnt speaking, except briefly to Deion Sanders for NFL Network, to the Seahawks website, and to Armed Forces Network. Seattles star running back, wearing a cap, hood and dark sunglasses, even acknowledged he was trying to avoid being fined by the league for not meeting his media requirements Tuesday. Thats why he returned to the floor of the arena rather than disappear completely after he cut short his Q and A with perhaps 100 media members packed together trying to hear his pearls of wisdom. When he came back, one reporter asked Lynch, "Are you trying to avoid being fined by standing here?" Lynch twice nodded his head yes. Earlier this month, Lynch was fined $50,000 for not co-operating with the Seattle media. The NFL put the fine on hold, saying it would be rescinded if he complied with media obligations. "Players are required to participate and he participated. We will continue to monitor the situation," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Tuesday. Lynch has required media sessions Wednesday and Thursday. The Seahawks play the Denver Broncos on Sunday. Along with letting slip a profanity to Sanders, he three times described himself as "smooth" to the Hall of Fame cornerback, adding: "I aint never seen no talk that won me nothing." Earlier, Lynch answered 16 questions at the outset of the Seahawks one-hour availability, with topics ranging from the Denver defence to teammate Michael Robinson to, well, why he avoids interviews. "I like to keep it low key," said Lynch, who the Seahawks opted to nott place in one of the 17 areas with microphones and name plates identifying the players.dddddddddddd "Im just about action. You say hut and theres action. All the unnecessary talk, it dont do nothing for me. I appreciate that people want to hear from me, but I just go to work and do my thing. You feel me?" Whether Lynch will feel like showing up the next two days, when the Seahawks will be available in a hotel ballroom -- no barriers between them and the media -- is uncertain. Lynch also talked to teammates while standing around. Several youngsters in the stands above him asked to have footballs signed and he obliged once they tossed him the souvenirs. He also signed a Seahawks helmet, but he didnt converse with the fans. While he did that, about five dozen media members stood in front of Lynch and shouted out a few questions. He ignored almost all of them as time ran out in Seattles availability. Lynch watched as the scoreboard clock counted down to zero and, when it was announced the Seattle portion of media availability was over, he left for good. "Hes such a major factor on our football team," coach Pete Carroll said, "but in this setting he becomes somewhat of a recluse and doesnt want to be a part of it. We try and respect that as much as we can." Robinson was asked if he advised his backfield mate on how to handle media day. "Hes a grown man," Robinson said. "I dont tell him much. I think he knows what hes doing. Hes got a good plan in place, and as long as he runs inside-outside zone on Sunday, Im happy with that." Lynch never has explained his beef with the media. He regularly spoke to reporters until late in the 2012 season. In March of that year, he signed a four-year contract worth $31 million, including a guaranteed $18 million. In July 2012, he was arrested for driving under the influence near his hometown of Oakland, Calif. ' ' '

Fort Worth, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Undefeated TCU welcomes the 17th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers to Wilkerson-Greines Athletic Center on Saturday to kick off the Big 12 Conference schedule for both programs. One of only a handful of programs still with an unblemished record heading into the new calendar year, the Horned Frogs have spent the majority of the campaign to this point playing at home. The team has won some very lopsided decisions of late, albeit against considerably weaker competition in order to boost their stats at both ends of the floor. On Monday, the Frogs entertained Tennessee State at the University Rec Center and demolished the Tigers in a 60-40 final. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers have been close to perfect, losing just a single game to LSU by a single point, 74-73, during the Big 12/SEC Challenge early last month. Since that setback, WVU has responded with five more wins, the latest being an 82-51 blowout of Virginia Tech at home on Tuesday. West Virginia is a perfect 4-0 in the all-time series with the Horned Frogs, with the most recent meeting taking place last March and the Mountaineers delivering a lopsided 81-59 decision. Despite shooting only 38.7 percent from the field in the first half, compared to 55.0 percent for the Hokies, WVU took a 33-30 lead into intermission and then blew the doors off the visitors. The Mountaineers made good on 64.3 percent from the floor and 7-of-11 behind the 3-point line in the second half, all while limiting Tech to just nine total field goals in the frame. Juwan Staten produced 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, followed by Gary Browne with 12 points, while Devin Williams came up a point shy of a double-double as he accounted for 11 rebounds. Defensively, the hosts forced VaTech into a staggering 25 turnovers. Just five wins away from matching their total from all of last season, the Mountaineers having been getting the job done at both ends of the floor. The squad is generating 78.9 ppg, thanks to the efforts of Staten (16.1 ppg), Jonathan Holton (11.0 ppg) and Devin Williams (10.1 ppg), the former also handing out 55 assists and the latter two performers combining to clear more than 14 rebounds per contest. Defensively, WVU has limited opponents to only 60.3 ppg while forcing them into a staggering 23 turnovers per outing. TCU was all over Tennessee State earlier this week, holding the visitors to only six field goals in the first half and a total of 14 overall, matching the number of turnovers suffered by the Tigers. Kyan Anderson scored 16 points for the Frogs, but he arrived there by shooting only 4-of-14 from the floor and 2- of-11 behind the 3-point line. Trey Zeigler chipped in 10 points and Chris Washburn eight and 12 rebounds, the latter being second only to Kenrich Williams who pulled down 13 boards off the bench. Anderson, the leading scorer in the last two games for the Horned Frogs and seven times overall in 2014-15, is the lone double-digit scorer on the unit with his 13.4 ppg. He has missed just four of his 49 attempts at the free- throw line and is also tops on the unit with 55 assists and 19 steals, doing everything he possibly can to ensure success for the program. Like West Virginia, defense has been key for the Frogs as they limit opponents to a meager 33.9 percent shooting from the floor, one of the best marks in all of college basketball, leading to just 53.2 ppg. After a simple tweak, Wood cruised the rest of the way. The left-hander retired 19 of his final 21 batters and pitched two-hit ball for seven innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 on Sunday. "It was a struggle there in the first," Wood said. "We werent missing bad, but we were missing, so (there was) kind of a minor adjustment I had to make. I was kind of flying open a little bit there in the first after the first or second hitter, so we made it and were able to roll after that." Welington Castillo and Mike Olt homered for the Cubs, who took two of three from the NL Central leaders to win a series for the second time this season. Wood (4-4) allowed two runs and struck out seven. All three of his walks came in the first inning. "When he locates down into the corners, hes really, really effective," Chicago manager Rick Renteria said. The Cubs won their first series since taking two of three against the St. Louis Cardinals from May 2-4. "We had some timely hitting. Our pitching has been really good, and weve been able to close out the ballgames we lead," Renteria said. Hector Rondon earned his fifth save in five chances after allowing a leadoff double to Ryan Braun in the ninth for Milwaukees third hit. The Brewers, who began the day with the NLs best record, have scored 11 runs in five games. "He keeps the fastball away well. He throws the cutter inside to right-handers well and mixes in a curveball," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said about Wood. "He commanded the ball well, and were a little bit off offensively. Three hits, just not many guys on base to do things with." Marco Estrada (3-2) gave up four runs and seven hits -- five doubles and two homers -- in five innings.dddddddddddd. In nine games this season, Estrada has served up 12 home runs, second-most in the majors. "I was terrible, plain and simple. Terrible," Estrada said. "Ive got to figure things out. My off-speed pitches havent been there and thats whats letting me down, that and elevating the fastball when Im not trying to." Castillos two-run shot gave the Cubs a 2-0 lead in the second. Luis Valbuena scored on Castillos fifth homer after drawing a walk. The Cubs extended their lead to 3-0 in the third after Starlin Castro and Valbuena hit back-to-back doubles with two outs. Olt hit his team-leading ninth homer in the fourth to make it 4-0. He leads NL rookies in home runs. "Ive just gotten some good pitches to hit," Olt said. "As long as Im doing that, then Im happy. The home runs, I guess, have come in bunches. Hopefully I can keep it going." The Brewers got their first hit on Logan Schafers one-out double against Wood in the fifth. Two batters later, Rickie Weeks hit a two-run homer to cut the lead to 4-2. The Brewers had been scoreless for 20 straight innings, since the second inning on Friday. "The first inning or two, when you have a pitcher in trouble, you need to get to them early," Roenicke said. NEW YORK -- Craig Kimbrel hardly ever needs help with the ninth inning. He got some Saturday night. Jordan Walden nailed down the final out with the bases loaded after Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez pulled his star closer following a shaky performance in a 7-5 win over the New York Mets. Sidelined recently by shoulder discomfort, Kimbrel threw 24 pitches during his first outing in a week. The Braves didnt want him to go any longer, and Gonzalez thought the reliever was rusty. "The good thing is that we got him on the mound and got him pitching and well go from there," Gonzalez said, adding that Kimbrel was pain-free. "He was fine. He was good. Thats a good, positive sign." Freddie Freeman had three hits and hustled his way through a weird play that brought the Braves two runs when the Mets were unable to challenge a costly incorrect call. Ervin Santana pitched seven crisp innings for his second win over New York in three starts with Atlanta. Justin Upton hit a three-run homer in the ninth to make it 7-3, and that became crucial when the Mets rallied against Kimbrel. They scored twice off the hard-throwing right-hander, who loaded the bases with a two-out walk to Lucas Duda. Thats when Gonzalez went to the mound and lifted Kimbrel, who wasnt happy about it. "Thats what makes him good," Gonzalez said. "At that point of the game he dont care about his arm, he dont care about anything, but he wants to finish that inning." Kimbrel waited an extra moment or two before reluctantly handing over the ball. "Im a competitor and anytime you get taken out, obviously you get upset about it and I did," said Kimbrel, who apologized to Gonzalez after the game. "Thats disrespectful to him, to the team and its just not the type of person I am and I felt awful about it." Walden retired Travis dArnaud on a grounder to secure his first save of the season and Atlantas seventh victory in eight games. Gold Glove shortstop Andrelton Simmons was shaded toward the hole and made a strong throw to get dArnaud. "I was ready. Im always ready," Walden said. Santana (2-0) allowed one run and struck out seven, giving the Braves their latest outstanding start. Despite several significant injuries in spring training, Atlantas rotation entered with a 1.47 ERA -- best in the majors by nearly a full run. David Wright, Daniel Murphy and Chris Young all had three hits for the Mets, held to one by Aaron Harang and two relievers in the series opener Friday night. Bartolo Colon (1-3) gave up three runs in seven innings for New York. Young cut it to 4-2 with an RBI single in the eighth off David Carpenter. Duda made a bid for a three-run homer with a long drive that was caught on the warning track in right field. "I thought it was a home run," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "I thought he hit that ball good." A single by dArnaud brought the Mets within one, but Carpenter ended the inning by retiring Ruben Tejada on an easy grounder with runners at the corners. Uptons fifth homer came off Jose Valverde and followed an intentional walk to Freeman. Atlanta was trailing 1-0 with two outs in the third when Freeman fisted a soft bouncer between the mound and home plate. Colon appeared to be in no particular rush to pick it up -- and then he threw wildly past first base as Freeman hustled down the line. Two runners scored on Colons error, and Freeman was credited with an infield single. But replays showed the ball hit Freemans front foot before bounding onto the grass, so it should have been ruled foul. Collins could not challenge the call because only batted balls that "first land at or beyond the set positions of the first or third base umpire" are subject to video review for fair or foul, according to baseballs replay rules. Since the ball rolled right in front of the plate, the Mets had no recourse. "Nobody saw it and you cant challenge it," Collins said. "You have to understand that this is a whole work in progress." Freeman doubled home a run in the fifth, and Upton scored on Daisuke Matsuzakas wild pitch in the eighth to make it 4-1. NOTES: Braves LHP Mike Minor (left shoulder tendinitis) gave up two earned runs in six innings during a rehab start for Triple-A Gwinnett. He could come off the disabled list next week. ... Backup outfielder Jordan Schafer injured the middle finger on his right hand but said he got X-rays and everything is fine. ... Young doubled in the fourth for his first hit with the Mets. Bud Cooper Jersey Retro . Jeter doubled high off the left-field wall and scored on Jacoby Ellsburys first hit in pinstripes in the fifth. Hiroki Kuroda (1-1) pitched 6 1-3 sharp innings in the Yankees 112th opener in New York. In what manager Joe Girardi said would be a season-long lovefest for Jeter, the shortstop was cheered every step of the way by an adoring crowd of 48, 142 -- even when his double-play grounder back to Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez (0-2) scored Solarte in the third inning for the first run. Marian Hossa scored two goals, and Kris Versteeg and Bryan Bickell also tallied to lead Chicago past Anaheim 4-2 to end the Ducks eight-game winning streak and hand them only their second loss in the past 20 games. Despite scuffling along at 1-1-3 in its past five games, defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago entered the game with the NHLs second-best point total. And through most of the showdown against league-leading Anaheim, the Blackhawks were a step quicker and more determined physically. "We knew wed be facing the hottest team in the league," Hossa said. "We knew we had to stop them somehow. "We got scored on the last few minutes, but we still got the two points, which is important." With Chicago cruising 3-0, Anaheims Ryan Getzlaf scored on a wrist shot to cap an odd-man break with 6:13 left in the third to end Corey Crawfords shutout bid. Then Kyle Palmieri connected on a 40-foot shot 53 seconds later to make it close before Hossa scored into an empty net with 7.6 seconds left. Crawford made 19 saves to help the Blackhawks end a five-game losing streak against Anaheim -- including three straight in Chicago -- and beat the Ducks for the first time since December 2011. And Chicago made its statement. "Everybody comes into this building and playing us as the defending Stanley Cup champion, everybodys got their game high," Hossa said. "Now were playing the team in first, and everybody in the dressing room can feel the intensity. "Everybody prepared really well. We always have trouble playing this team. Thats why the win is big." Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville liked what he saw for most of the game. "We had a good purpose, it seemed, every shift," Quenneville said. "All of a sudden its 3-2 and anything can happen at the end. "But we got out of this one, but for the most part, the other 54 minutes, we played the right way." Anaheims run of 18 wins in 19 games began with a 3-2 shootout victory at Chicago on Dec. 6. It was the longest span of one-loss play since the 1967-68 Montreal Canadiens won a record 20 of 21. "I think we were ready, but we were really tentative," Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. "We were sitting around and watching them as though we were watching the Stanley Cup champions rather than playing. "Maybe with all the pressure weve gotten in the last two days, some guys maybe werent ready for this," he added. "Its a learning experience. To be on top theres a commitment you have to make or you dont stay they very long." Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller was sharp and made 31 saves, but his 14-game winning streak ended..ddddddddddddThat run tied him for second-longest in NHL history with four other goalies. Hiller hadnt lost since a shootout defeat to Los Angeles on Dec. 3. "I think it was definitely not our best game," Hiller said. "If you play a team like the Blackhawks, you cant just try to work for half a period or one period and hope you win." Chicago outshot the Ducks 35-21. Versteeg collided with Bickell behind the Anaheim net at the end of the second period and didnt skate in the third. Hes out day to day with an upper-body injury. Chicago outshot Anaheim 15-8 in the first period and led 2-0 after 20 minutes. The Blackhawks dominated early, and Hossa opened the scoring with a short-handed goal at 10:34. Toews skated quickly out of the Chicago zone and sent the puck to Hossa on right wing. As Toews streaked down the slot, Hossa faked, used Anaheim defenceman Cam Fowler as a screen and fired a low shot under Hillers pads. It was the first time the Blackhawks had opened the scoring since Jan. 3, a span of six games. Versteeg made it 2-0 with 2:54 left in the period when he batted in a loose puck that two Ducks players couldnt handle. Anaheims Matt Beleskey knocked the puck away from Versteeg as he tried to cut in from the right corner, but it deflected off defenceman Sami Vatanen and toward the net. Versteeg got a piece of the flipping puck and directed it past Hiller. Crawford made a point-blank pad save on Corey Perry with 1:13 left to maintain Chicagos two-goal lead. He stopped Saku Koivu on a short-handed 2-on-1 break early in the scoreless second. Aided by three power plays, Blackhawks outshot the Ducks 11-3 in the middle period. Bickell made it 3-0 at 10:13 of the third. He gained a step on Anaheim defenceman Ben Lovejoy, plowed down the slot and fired. Hiller got a piece of the shot, but it rolled over him and into the net. After Getzlaf cut it to 3-1 with 6:13 left, Palmieri fooled Crawford on a low 40-foot shot from the slot 53 seconds later to set up a wild finish. The Ducks pressured and pulled Hiller for an extra attacker with 1:10 left, but couldnt tie it. NOTES: The Ducks announced D Sheldon Souray will miss the season after another operation on his right wrist. Souray, 37, was injured during summer training and he never got on the ice in his second year in Anaheim. ... Ducks D Bryan Allen returned after missing five games with a lower-body injury. ... BALTIMORE -- Jon Jones had the Baltimore crowd roaring when he broke out the "squirrel" dance made famous by Ray Lewis. It was just the opening act of a dazzling performance. "I hope I got the dance right," Jones said. He nailed it -- then went out and punished Glover Teixeira. Jones flawlessly mixed jabs and elbows in one of the greatest fights of his career, winning a unanimous decision over Teixeira on Saturday night at UFC 172, successfully defending his light heavyweight championship for the seventh straight time. Jones (20-1) won 50-45 on all three scorecards and rolled to his 11th straight victory, the longest streak among active UFC fighters. "I think it was the best peformance of his career," UFC President Dana White said. "I thought he never looked better than he did tonight." He opened his pre-fight walk with the dance Lewis made his signature move. The former Baltimore Ravens linebacker had a cageside seat and stood several times to root on Jones. Chandler Jones and Arthur Jones, his NFL-playing brothers, also attended and sat near Lewis. Arthur Jones, who plays for the Colts, was a Super Bowl champion with Lewis and the Ravens. Often booed, the fighter nicknamed "Bones" turned Baltimore into a home-cage advantage and showed Lewis that perhaps imitation was the sincerest form of battery. "It was great to have the crowd on my side again," he said. "I practiced that dance all day today. Ray was happy." Teixeira (22-3) ended a 20-bout winning streak that dates nine years. "To beat a guy who hasnt lost in 20 fights, I cant complain about that peformance," Jones said. Jones was warned twice about eye pokes in the first two rounds and was threatened to have a point deducted if he did it again. No need. He battered and bloodied the challenger, opening a cut over Teixeiras right eye, and sending his mouthpiece flying with a hard right. Jones took down Teixeira in the final seconds of the fourth and pounded away on his face before the horn sounded. He was in complete control in his latest dominant performance, something he vowed to do after he took a pounding the last time out against Alexander Gustafsson. Jones, one of UFCs biggest active pay-per-view draws, pinned Teixeira against the cage several times and wore him down with body shots. White said Gustafsson and Jones will have a rematch next. "I had to answer a lot of questions after my last fight," Jones said. "Had I lost my mojo? I answered those tonight." Just blocks away from Camden Yards, the real heavy hitters were inside Baltimore Arena for UFCs debut in the city. In the co-main event, Anthony "Rumble" Johnson cruised to a unanimous decision victory over former Penn State wrestler Phil Davis. Johnson fought for UFC for the first time in more than two years after he was cut once before for repeatedly failing to make weight. White welcomed Johnson back with one caveat, he would never return if he failed to make weight for the Davis bout. Johnson made weight for the 205-pound bout -- and made Davis pay. He busted open Davis near his left eye with a flurry of strikes early in the first, stopped all eight takedown attempts over three rounds and won 30-27 on all three cards. Looking at White, Johnson expressed gratitude for his second chance. "Mr. Dana White, thank you for what you did," he said. "Hes the man who changed me. Hes the man who turned me into a beast!" Earlier on the pay-per-view card, Max Halloway choked out Andre Fili in the third round and Jim Miller did the same against Yancy Medeiros in the first round. Luke Rockhold tapped out Tim Boetsch in the first round to keep UFC 172 humming along. "Its the night of guillotines, I guess," Miller said. With UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey in her corner, Jessamyn Duke dropped a unanimous decision to Bethe Correia in the only womens bout. Rousey, perhaps UFCs biggest star, accompanied Duke to the octagon and shook her head in disgust after the scores were announced. "I thought I had it," Duke said. "I knew it was going to be close, but I really thought the fight was mine." Rousey coached Duke on "The Ultimate Fighter" and they train together with other female fighters known as "The Four Horsewomen." Rouseys appearance had fans standing and snapping pictures and was a highlight among the preliminary bouts. Chris Beal opened the card with a flying right knee that connected flush on Patrick Williams chin for a KO. "This might have been the most perfect flying knee Ive ever seen!" White tweeted. MELBOURNE, Australia -- Rafael Nadal continued his dominant streak over Roger Federer to reach the Australian Open final for the third time, beating the 17-time major winner 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-3 Friday night to set up a championship decider against No. 8-seeded Stan Wawrinka. With his 23rd win in 33 matches against Federer, the 27-year-old Spaniard set up an ideal chance to win a 14th Grand Slam title and to become the first man to win all four majors at least twice in the Open era. Nadal missed the 2013 Australian Open during a seven-month layoff for illness and a knee injury, but returned to win the French and U.S. Opens among his 10 titles for the season and finished the year at No. 1. He won the Australian Open in 2009, beating Federer in the final, and lost in a five-set, 5-hour, 53-minute 2012 final to Novak Djokovic after ousting Federer in the semis. In other years, hes struggled with injuries -- its the only Grand Slam tournament he hasnt won at least twice. "Its really, really emotional for me to be back on this court, Rod Laver Arena, and to be able to play another final," Nadal said. "I think tonight I played the best match of the tournament. I go on court (against Federer) knowing that is a really tough match and if I am not playing my best, I will not have the chance to win." At the end of the night, Federer knew he wouldnt even be the No. 1-ranked player in Switzerland next week. By reaching his first major final, Wawrinka ensured hed replace Federer as their countrys highest-ranked player for the first time. But the 32-year-old Federer is confident of winning more majors, expecting some coaching from Stefan Edberg and continued improvement in his fitness to help after a slump in 2013, when he didnt reach any of the major finals for the first time in 11 years. "I still think my best tennis is only ahead of me now," said Federer, who reached the Australian Open semifinals for 11 consecutive years. Nadal is now second on the list of players reaching Grand Slam finals, joining Ivan Lendl on 19 -- Federer leads the list with 24. Another Grand Slam title would lift Nadal to equal second on the all-time list with Pete Sampras, who was in the crowd for the match. Nadal has struggled with a blister on the ppalm of his left hand in his last two matches, but he removed the heavy tape that affected his serve in his quarterfinal win over Grigor Dimitrov and replaced it with one square of adhesive tape.dddddddddddd. A TV camera got a close-up view of the blister when he took a medical timeout after the first game of the second set, drawing gasps and groans from the crowd. "Too much talk about the blister. The blister is OK," Nadal said in his on-court interview. "The problem ... is the position of the blister, its difficult." But, he said, he didnt feel any pain. He certainly didnt show it if he did. He resisted just about everything Federer threw at him, scrambling to keep balls in play that usually would be winners. Federer served and volleyed, he played with good touch, he played drop shots, he tried everything -- even complaining to the chair umpire about Nadals loud grunting after the tiebreaker -- but his 50 resulting unforced errors doubled the number by his rival. Left-handed Nadal hit 13 of his 28 winners on his powerful forehand, attacking Federers one-handed backhand yet again. "I tried a few things ... then again, Rafa does a good job of neutralizing you," Federer said. "So I guess at times I couldnt quite do what I wanted to do, but thats because of Rafa." The first break of the match came in the sixth game of the second set, giving Nadal a 4-2 lead. That only heightened the crowd support for Federer, who got a standing ovation when he broke Nadal back to make it 2-all in the third set, immediately after dropping serve in the previous game. It noise and chants died down again when Federer was broken again soon after and Nadal finished off the match. Wawrinka beat Tomas Berdych on Thursday night, getting an extra day off ahead of Sundays championship match. Li Na will be hoping for third time lucky in the womens final on Saturday against Dominika Cibulkova. She has reached the finals in three of the past four years, but is yet to win the Australian title. Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci rallied to win the last five games and successfully defended their Australian Open womens doubles title on Friday with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Russian pair Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina. Pinch-hitter Tommy Medica singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Padres beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1 in their first home game since Gwynn died of cancer Monday. The Vancouver Whitecaps lost at home for just the second time this season in MLS league play on Saturday, falling victim to a third minute strike by Landon Donovan to lose 1-0 to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Results elsewhere over the weekend saw the Whitecaps drop from the fifth and final playoff spot to seventh place in the Western Conference. The opening 45 minutes saw the Whitecaps struggle to find their rhythm in midfield. Head coach Martin Rennie prefers to play a 4-3-3 formation, with Gershon Koffie his preferred option as a number six (holding midfielder) and Nigel Reo-Coker as a number eight (box-to-box midfielder). Unfortunately for the Whitecaps, their options for the number ten role (attacking, creative midfielder) are very limited. Daigo Kobayashi has been given plenty of opportunity to earn his place in that role, yet every time he takes the field, he is found wanting. He just doesnt have a enough of an influence on the game, despite having the technical ability to do so. He hides from his teammates at times; he makes an angle to receive the ball, but not enough of an angle to make passing him the ball a legitimate option. That his instructions from the coaching staff upon being put into the game as a second half substitute on Saturday were, "Get involved!" speaks volumes about his lack of influence. Against the Galaxy on Saturday, Matt Watson was given an opportunity to stake his claim for the third midfield spot alongside Koffie and Reo-Coker. Unfortunately for Watson, he simply isnt the option that the Whitecaps require. Watson is a hard-working, diligent, versatile player. He covers a lot of ground, and his work rate is excellent. However, a number ten needs to have exceptional technical ability, vision and creativity - characteristics not generally viewed as Watsons strengths. The Galaxy goal was an excellent example of this. As the ball was played in to Watson from left fullback Jordan Harvey, Watsons best option was to play the ball around the corner with the outside of his right foot, into the feet of striker Darren Mattocks. Watsons technique let him down, as his wayward pass was intercepted by Galaxy fullback A.J. DeLaGarza, whose ball up to Robbie Keane was deflected into Donovans path.dddddddddddd Donovan took a touch before smashing a left-foot strike into the top corner. (There is plenty of blame for the goal to be laid at the feet of Mattocks, whose lack of awareness was painfully obvious - but that is for another blog!) Given the players at Rennies disposal, if his preference is to stick with a 4-3-3 formation, he might consider dropping Kenny Miller into the number ten role - something that worked well in pre-season for the Caps. The reason to choose Miller over players like Russell Teibert or Kekuta Manneh is very simple: those players are still very young, and the burden of such an important role should be borne by an experienced player. Miller has shown that he is capable of causing problems when dropping into the gap between the opponents back four and midfield, which is the area traditionally occupied by a number ten. Shifting him into this role is something that he would take in his stride, allowing the Whitecaps to use an array of speedy options up front. The likes of Manneh, Mattocks, and Erik Hurtado are exceptionally quick. With leading scorer Camilo always likely to be the first option through the middle up front and Teibert occupying the right side, Rennie could start with Manneh on the left, leaving the speed of Mattocks and Hurtado as options off the bench. Another solution for Rennie, of course, is to bring in a new player to occupy the number ten role. With the transfer window now being closed in MLS, that will have to wait until the end of the season. Ironically, former Whitecap Davide Chiumiento would thrive in Rennies current squad, given the additions of experienced players like Miller and Reo-Coker. A player of Chiumientos ilk is certain to be top of Rennies shopping list in the offseason. Before we get there, though, the Whitecaps have a tough run of games to finish the season, with eight of their nine remaining league games being against Western Conference opponents. If they are to make a second consecutive playoff appearance, the Whitecaps will have to first address their lack of balance in midfield. ' ' '

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti was released from a Houston hospital Thursday, four days after fracturing his spine and breaking his right ankle in an IndyCar Series crash. "Im overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and Im thankful to have such a great family and such wonderful friends and fans. Thanks to everyone at the hospital and the track who took such good care of me during my stay in Houston," Franchitti said in a statement. Franchitti was headed back to Indianapolis for further evaluation and will eventually have a second surgery on his ankle. He underwent surgery Sunday night to stabilize his ankle following the accident on the last lap of the Grand Prix of Houston. Target Chip Ganassi Racing released a photo of the four-time series champion before he left the hospital. Franchitti was smiling, surrounded by his two dogs, and aided by a walker. His right leg was in a cast and he was wearing a heavy brace around his torso. He will be replaced by Alex Tagliani in the No. 10 Honda in the Oct. 19 season finale at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., where teammate Scott Dixon will be trying to win his third IndyCar championship. "I look forward to watching Scott, Alex and the Target team next weekend on television, and will be pulling for them as they go for another championship," Franchitti said. Dixon joked Thursday that Franchitti had gotten use of his phone again, "so thats a good sign. He seems to be in good spirits," and has mentioned trying to come to Fontana to watch the race. Although hes glad the team picked Tagliani to as a replacement driver, Dixon said hed have liked to have his longtime teammate in the car next week. "I would have liked Dario to be there and to be in fighting spirits and helping me win the championship," Dixon said. "I think Tag was a solid choice. As a team, the drivers and myself, we dont have much control in situations like that. I think they picked the best guy. Im great friends with Tag. We hang out a fair bit, and it makes it an easy transition." Dixon takes a 25-point lead over Helio Castroneves into the finale. He was down 49 points going into last weekends doubleheader at Houston, where he won the first race and finished second on Sunday. Castroneves said Franchitti was slow to respond this week to emails from drivers, but is finally communicating. "He mentioned that he is on a lot of painkillers, so hes not feeling so much," Castroneves said Thursday. "He is joking right now hes not feeling much. But we are very glad -- I mean, it could be more serious than that." Franchitti was injured when his car made contact with Takuma Satos car in Turn 5 and sailed into the fence. It tore a section of fencing out before his car bounced back onto the track. Debris scattered into the grandstand, injuring 13 fans and an IndyCar official. Castroneves said the fence at Reliant Park worked in that it kept Franchittis car inside the course. Dixon praised the new DW-12 car, introduced last season. "What the car went through and how Darios crash sort of played out, you know, he was lucky. The car did exactly what it should have," Dixon said. "Having seen the car after the wreck, its done its job. I think we definitely saw the advantages of some of the safety things that have been added to the cars throughout the years, and IndyCar is as always ever pushing on and trying to make them safer, and they are. "But still reality, man. Its racing, fast cars, and some tricky positions sometimes." Noel Acciari Jersey .com) - The Winnipeg Jets placed defenceman Paul Postma on injured reserve Tuesday. I thought it might be interesting to see what the D-backs have done over their 16 years compared to what the Blue Jays have done over their past 16 campaigns.(SportsNetwork.com) - The Baltimore Orioles try to draw closer to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East tonight when the divisional foes continue a four-game set at Camden Yards. Baltimore trimmed the Blue Jays lead atop the division to 3 1/2 games on Thursday, as Delmon Young hit a two-run homer to help the Os take a 4-2 win. The Orioles handed Mark Buehrle his second straight loss, knocking him around for eight hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings to help Baltimore win for the third time in four tries. Toronto will send righty Drew Hutchison to the mound on Friday, with a 4-4 records and a 3.96 ERA. Hutchison was roughed up his last time out on Sunday against St. Louis, as he gave up five runs and six hits in three innings. Hutchison could get himself righted on Friday, as he owns a 2.03 ERA in eight road starts compared to an 8.72 ERA in five home outings "Hes definitely pitched better on the road -- and some guys are like that," Gibbons said after Hutchisons latest turn. "Its hard to put a finger on it. But you cant pitch them on the road every time." The scuffling Blue Jays have lost five of their last six on the heels of an 18-3 stretch. Theyve also managed just nine runs in that span. "As hot as we were, we were going to cool off sooner or later," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "Well get it going. Were too good of an offense. Well be OK." In the series opening victory over the Blue Jays, Kevvin Gausman (2-1) picked up his second win in a row, allowing a run on five hits and three walks over six frames.dddddddddddd The former first-round pick was coming off his first win as a starter on Saturday against Oakland, when he struck out six in seven innings and gave up just four hits and one run. "He didnt quite have the command he had last time out," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter, "but thats kind of hard to duplicate." Buehrle (10-3) remained tied with Yankees rookie Masahiro Tanaka for the MLB lead in wins. He also lost to St. Louis on Saturday despite giving up just one run in seven innings, snapping a seven-start unbeaten streak Baltimore may have a hard time shrinking Torontos lead even more on Friday, as it turns to righty Ubaldo Jimenez, who has lost his last three decisions and is coming off an awful showing his last time out. Jimenez was banged around by Oakland on Sunday to the tune of six runs and two hits with five walks in just 2 1/3 innings, as he fell to 2-7 to go along with a 5.01 ERA. Jimenez had faced the minimum batters through two innings before the wheels came off in the third. "I started so good the first couple innings, and then that inning I lost the ability to throw a strike," Jimenez said. "Its one of those days. Its a really tough game." Jimenez is 2-2 in six starts versus the Blue Jays with a 5.23 ERA. Baltimore has won four of its seven matchups with the Blue Jays this season. ' ' '

Foxboro, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh called Joe Flacco the NFLs best quarterback last week. Tom Brady had something to say about that this week. Bradys 367 yards and three touchdowns, the last a go-ahead 23-yard strike to Brandon LaFell with 5;13 remaining, rallied the New England Patriots to a 35-31 AFC Divisional Playoff victory over Harbaughs Ravens at Gillette Stadium. The fourth postseason meeting between the teams in six years was another classic, with the Patriots twice battling back from 14 points down -- including a 28-14 deficit midway through the third quarter -- and not taking their first lead until Bradys final TD delivery of the day. New England also overcome a career postseason-best four touchdown throws from Flacco, though his second interception of the game virtually ended Baltimores own comeback hopes with 1:39 left to play. The top-seeded Patriots advanced to their fourth straight AFC Championship Game, where theyll await the winner of Sundays Indianapolis-Denver clash. Final Score: Seattle 31, Carolina 17 Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kam Chancellor bobbed his head in celebration as he crossed the goal line on his game-clinching 90-yard interception return. Chancellors pick-six came with the Panthers marching down the field looking to cut a 24-10 deficit to a one-possession game. Faced with a 2nd- and-4 at the Seattle 13 with a little over six minutes left, Cam Newton was looking to hit Ed Dickson on the right side of the field near the numbers. The ball-hawking Chancellor read Newtons eyes and cut in front of Dickson before strolling down the left sideline for the easy score. Chancellor had 10 tackles to go with that interception and showcased his athleticism by hurdling over the Carolina offensive line twice on a pair of Graham Gano field goal attempts at the end of the first half. Wilson, who was 8-of-8 on third down for 199 yards, finished 15-of-22 for 268 yards and added 22 yards on the ground. Stu Lantz Jersey .The team had a meeting prior to facing Russia at the world junior hockey championship and got the effort theyve been looking for by defeating the Russians 4-1 to advance to the quarter-finals.INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Pacers played just well enough to beat an inferior opponent, which has been the way most of their five-game win streak has gone. David West scored 25 points, Paul George added 22, and the Pacers beat the Utah Jazz 94-91 on Sunday night. Indianapolis native Gordon Hayward had 21 points and Derrick Favors scored 17 for the Jazz, nine of them in the first eight minutes as Utah opened a 14-4 lead. A dunk from Favors cut the Pacers lead to 89-86 with a minute left to play, and West missed a jumper to give Utah a chance to tie with 35 seconds remaining. Hayward cut the Indiana lead to one, but Lance Stephenson sank two free throws to seal the win. "This was a mental toughness win," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "I thought we played with extraordinary effort for four quarters." The Jazz made things interesting in the games fourth period thanks to Hayward, who had 10 of his 21 points in the final 15 minutes. His final five points came in the final minutes. Ian Mahinmi came off the bench to score nine points for the Pacers and provide key minutes, as Roy Hibbert struggled to contain Favors. Utah came out of halftime to score eight unanswered points and force Indiana to call an early timeout. The Pacers retook the lead when Mahinmi was fouled on a layup. Mahinmi made the free throw to put Indiana up 60-58. "Ive pretty solid on defence all season long," Mahinmi said. "My shot blocking has been up. My timing is good." CJ Watson, starting for the injured George Hill, scored 13 points for the Pacers. Hill sat out his second straight game with a bruised shoulder. After coming off the bennch to score 17 in a win over Boston a night earlier, Evan Turner struggled in his reserve role.dddddddddddd Turner, acquired from Philadelphia on Feb. 20, scored eight points and shot 2 of 9 in 20 minutes. But the Pacers got a boost from Mahinmi and Watson to pull out another win against an opponent they might have easily beaten earlier in the season. After two close tilts against Milwaukee and a come-from-behind victory in Boston on Saturday night, Indiana survived a scare against one of the Wests worst teams. But all night long, Utah buckled under pressure from one of the NBAs best defensive teams. The Jazz finished with 18 turnovers, which led to 24 points for Indiana. George went down hard after being fouled on a drive to the basket late in the third quarter. George slammed to the floor and appeared to hit his head, but remained in the game to sink both free throws. Hayward rebounded from a slow start to put together one of his best games since January. In his fourth time playing in his native city, he shot 8 of 15 from the field after being held scoreless until the beginning of the second period. He scored seven straight points in the third quarter, keeping the Jazz in the game while the rest of the offence sputtered. "I thought I was quiet in the first half, but I was proud of the way we came back and fought against a team with a real good record, especially here at home," Hayward said. Hayward, who led Butler to an NCAA championship game appearance in 2010, averaged 12.2 points on 34.1 shooting in 12 games in February. He came into the game having scored only 21 points in four games in Bankers Life Fieldhouse. ' ' '
