FORTALEZA, Brazil -- Ivory Coast coach Sabri Lamouchi will quit after his squad narrowly missed qualification in the World Cup with an injury-time penalty from Greece. Lamouchi said he would not seek the renewal of his contract, which ended after the tournament in Brazil. The 42-year-old former France international took over the Elephants two years ago, and started the match against Greece poised to make the knockout stage for the first time in three attempts. But the Ivorians were held back by the defensive Greeks who rose from last place in Group C to qualify with a 2-1 win. The Elephants also failed to impress in last years African Cup after a strong start, losing in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Nigeria. "My contract was ending at this World Cup and there will no renewal. The reasons why are obvious," he said. "We havent done well at the World Cup or at the African Cup, so I think the decision is logical. My journey with the Ivory Coast ends here." Tyreek Hill Super Bowl Jersey . TORONTO - Ricky Foleys shock and dismay have been replaced by the excitement of returning home. The veteran defensive end spoke Monday for the first time since the Saskatchewan Roughriders dealt him to the Toronto Argonauts for Canadian linebacker Shea Emry on Saturday. The move was a surprise considering Foley re-signed with the club in December rather than test free agency after tying his career high with 12 sacks in 2014.It came out of left field . . . thats why I waited to really address anybody media-wise, Foley said from Vancouver during a conference call. It was the right decision to go to Saskatchewan, it was the right decision to sign there this off-season.It (the trade) was tough but now Im starting to get the goose bumps, emotions and excitement of going about going back home to Toronto and play with the Argos again. But not after issuing a thoughtful, heart-felt farewell to Rider Nation on his Twitter account. They embraced me especially, Foley said of the Riders rabid fans. Its hard to say I only had two years there, it kind of feels like I spent my whole career there and Im leaving after 10 years. Its special out there and Im looking at it as a blessing. I was really appreciative, I said it in the letter and meant it.The six-foot-two, 258-pound Foley first joined the Argos as a free agent in 2010 after starting his CFL career in 06 with the B.C. Lions. It was a homecoming for Foley, a native of Courtice, Ont. — roughly 60 kilometres east of Toronto — who played college football at York University.Foley, 32, spent three seasons with the Argos, finishing his first go-around with a bang. He was named the top Canadian in Torontos 34-22 victory over Calgary in the 100th Grey Cup game at Rogers Centre in November 2012.But there were times of frustration, too, struggling to adjust to former defensive co-ordinator Chris Joness schemes. A tenacious pass-rusher, Foley was often required to drop back into pass coverage like a linebacker.Foley, the CFLs top Canadian in 09 after posting 12 sacks with B.C., became a free agent shortly afterwards and instead of remaining in Toronto he signed with Saskatchewan. After recording eight sacks in the Riders Grey Cup-winning 13 campaign, Foley was a key cog in a unit that tracked down rival quarterbacks a league-leading 61 times last year. But with end John Chick (CFL-high 15 sacks) and tackle Tearrius George (12 sacks) — who also re-signed with the club this off-season —in the mix, GM Brendan Taman used his position of strength to shore up Saskatchewans linebacking corps with Emry, an eight-year veteran and two-time Grey Cup champion. The six-foot-one, 228-pound Emry had a team-high 72 tackles in his first season with Toronto. Sophomore American Brian Peters — a pending free agent — led Saskatchewan with 77 tackles but Emry, 28, of Richmond, B.C., allows the Riders to play an International starter elsewhere. The arrival last season of Cory Greenwood of Kingston, Ont., and presence of James Yurichuk of Brampton, Ont., and Winnipegs Thomas Miles allowed Toronto GM Jim Barker to deal Emry and upgrade a pass rush that had 46 sacks last yearShea came in and did a great job for us, Barker said. We were looking at playing two Canadian inside linebackers potentially and this presented itself. Its never easy to trade a popular player and a guy our coaching staff and myself really like but sometimes you have to put that stuff aside.Foley gives Toronto another dominant pass rusher to complement Tristan Okpalaugo (team-high 12 sacks as a rookie). Thats a need considering defensive back Jalil Carter — now with the NFLs Minnesota Vikings — was second on the unit with five sacks.Ricky fits what (defensive co-ordinator) Tim Burke wants to do, Barker said. Hes a straight-edge pass rusher who plays with high energy and is a total Toronto guy.Tristan had a great first year and hopefully the addition of Ricky will help him. Ricky has been on (three) championship teams . . . and having as many of those guys who know how to win on your club certainly helps.Barker wasnt surprised by Foleys return. When he left I actually told him at one point, Theres going to come a day when you come back to us, Barker said. Hes a pro and were excited to have him back.Foley was impressed with what he saw last year from Okpalaugo. He put up good numbers as far as sacks go but you could see him getting better as an all-around defensive end, Foley said. Thats something I take pride in.The glory stat is sacks but every year I try to make sure I lead the league in tackles by a defensive lineman because I think thats an effort thing that shows an all-round game.NOTES: The Argos named Jonathan Himebauch their offensive line coach and assistant head coach. He spent last year as Edmontons offensive line coach and has previous coaching experience with Montreal and Calgary. Vlade Divac Jersey .85 million contract with the two-time Gold Glove outfielder. There is no argument that the line of Pacioretty, David Desharnais and Thomas Vanek was one of the hottest in the NHL leading into the post-season, and they did combine for three goals and seven points, but it was the depth of all four lines that helped propel Montreal.DENVER - Instead of revving their high-octane offence like they did a year ago, Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos pumped the brakes heading into these playoffs.Theyre no longer the air-it-out team that piled up 606 points last season. Now, theyre built as much on a dominant, star-studded defence and good ground game as they are on Mannings mind and passing prowess. While taking on a new identity, the Broncos still managed to tie for the leagues best record for the third consecutive season under Manning. And their 30.1-point scoring average trailed only Green Bays 30.4.Still, Mannings stretch run — three touchdowns, six interceptions in December — is cause for concern among many an uneasy Broncos fan.C.J. Anderson, the first undrafted running back to score seven touchdowns in a month since Priest Holmes a decade ago, laughs at the notion. He offered this observation as the Broncos (12-4) got some much-needed R&R with a first-round bye:Ill just ask the fans this: Do you want Peyton to throw 70 million touchdowns and break 80 million records or do you all want a parade downtown?Andersons emergence since midseason has given the Broncos the kind of balance they had back in the late 1990s when John Elway had Terrell Davis to take share the load and help hoist two championship trophies.Anderson began the season buried on the depth chart, and only got his chance because of injuries to Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman. He quickly proved as adept at picking up the blitz as the first down, a prerequisite to joining Manning in the Broncos backfield. He finished with 1,173 yards from scrimmage and 10 TDs despite not starting until Week 11.C.J.s picked up this offence quickly, Manning said. He studied during the time that he wasnt playing, which has paid off for him.And the Broncos.I feel good that our run game has developed, that weve got a couple guys we really trust back there, and the fact that we are a little more balanced, said offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase. To have that effective balance going into (the playoffs) is going to be key for us.Even with the Broncos downshifting their offence, Demaryius Thomas posted a club-record 1,619 yards receiving. He became the seventh wide receiver in NFL history to post 10 100-yard games in a season.Emmanuel Sanders set career highs with 101 catches for 1,404 yards and nine touchdowns after four seasons in Pittsburgh where he never came close to those kinds of numbers.Sanders, who famously called Denver widee receiver heaven when he arrived as part of Elways splashy free agency class last spring, said this was the kind of year he envisioned.ddddddddddddI remember last year I was sitting around getting ready to be a free agent, and I said that I feel like me and Antonio Brown have the same type of game. I just need somebody to give me an opportunity, Sanders said. What I meant was the yards hes putting up, the balls that hes catching, I can do those things.A year ago, the Broncos suffered through an injury epidemic. And four players who had to watch the Super Bowl from the sideline have led Denvers defensive resurgence: pass rusher Von Miller (14 sacks), cornerback Chris Harris Jr. (zero touchdowns), safety Rahim Moore and lineman Derek Wolfe. They combined with newcomers T.J. Ward, Aqib Talib and DeMarcus Ware to post the leagues third-rated defence that was second against the run.But the fulcrum of co-ordinator Jack Del Rios unit was a major surprise: linebacker Brandon Marshall, who led the team with 110 tackles despite missing the last two games with a sprained foot.Marshall, cut several times by the Jaguars before ending up as a practice squad player in Denver last year, is both a tale of perseverance and overnight success. He couldnt even carve out a job for himself on one of the worst teams in the NFL and now hes an every-down linebacker and arguably the defensive MVP on one of the leagues best teams.Hes had a Pro Bowl kind of year, Del Rio said.Marshall wasnt among the Broncos league-high nine Pro Bowl selections, however.Another snub was nose tackle Terrance Knighton, who has guaranteed a return trip to the Super Bowl even if that means having to beat the Patriots on the road for the first time since 2006.Teams that win right now and end up winning Super Bowls are teams that can play good defence and have offences that can run the ball, Knighton reasoned. Right now, were fulfilling that blueprint.Given that, youd think Knighton had a little voice telling him last years joyride would end in bitter disappointment, as it did.No, no, because we were on the same high horse that everybody else was on. We didnt feel like our offence could be stopped, Knighton said, and we felt like as a defence we only had to do enough to win. This time theres no riding Supermans cape. No, it didnt work, said Knighton, whos confident the refurbished Broncos can get it done this way.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '

There are many Toronto Blue Jays fans still harbouring the dream that Ricky Romero can conquer his pitching demons and make it back to the Blue Jays and, in turn, again become the pitcher who won 42 games for the club from 2009 through 2011. But maybe its time to face facts, cut Ricky loose and give him a fresh start with another organization. After showing a little bit of progress at Triple-A Buffalo, the 29-year-old southpaw has regressed with three rocky starts in a row. Friday night at Charlotte, against the Chicago White Sox-affiliate Knights, he only lasted three innings, giving up five hits and five earned runs, walking five and striking out three. He also gave up a pair of home runs, a season high. In six games, all starts, Romero is 0-1 and has pitched only 27 innings, or just a little over four per start. Hes given up 30 hits, struck out 20 and has given up an alarming 23 walks. Remember the slide began in 2012, when Ricky went 9-14 with a 5.77 ERA and routinely melted down on the mound. Last season in a brief stint with the big club, he went 0-2 before getting shipping to Buffalo, where hes been ever since. So essentially, this is Ricky Romeros third season of trying to rediscover himself. You can see why the Blue Jays are going the extra mile with this. Romero was a staff ace and an All-Star. The Jays also owe him whats left of his $7.5 million for this season, another $7.5 million next year, plus a $600,000 buyout on his $13.1 million for 2016. So thats at least  $15.6 million guaranteed, owed for the next two-plus years. Youve heard that old cliche a million times about pro sports being a business where tough decisions have to be made. Well, maybe its time the Blue Jays made the call on Ricky Romero. Set him free and give him the chance to start with another organization, where he can put the struggles of the last three years behind him. The Blue Jays cut ties with J.P. Arencibia with little regret. Now is the time for Ricky Romero. - There is another interesting reclamation project going on with Buffalo right now. Georgetown, Ontario native Shawn Hill is trying to rebuild his pitching career at age 33. Hill has battled his way through two Tommy John surgeries and had two previous stints in the Blue Jays organization, albeit brief ones, in 2010 and 2012. Hill signed with the Jays in March and started out with Double-A New Hampshire going 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA. He was promoted to Buffalo last week and dropped his first start in Georgia against the Gwinnett Braves. He gave up six hits, including two homers, and walked two in six innings to take the loss in a 5-0 game. Can Shawn Hill make it all the way back? Maybe, but more likely than not, hes just an emergency depth arm the way Chien-Ming Wang was a year ago. Hill does hold one unique distinction, though. He won the last game contested between the Jays and the Montreal Expos. It came on July 4, 2004.  The game was played in Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the Expos played out a 20-game portion their schedule in their final year in Montreal before moving to Washington. Hill and the Expos won that game 6-4. - One arm that might help the Blue Jays out before the end of the season is that of Kyle Drabek.  A key piece of the Roy Halladay deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, Drabek has battled his own control demons, and like Romero, has had some epic mound meltdowns. He appears to be improving now at Buffalo. Hes 3-2 with a 4.04 ERA. Over 35.2 innings, Drabek has allowed seven homers, which is not good, but hes also struck out 30 while walking only 15. So there is a bit of hope there. - The strange thing about the Los Angeles Angels taking the first three games of this four-game set over the weekend: the Angels two best hitters, Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, had so little to do with the outcome. Pujols  who recently smacked his 500th homer and is one of the greatest players of his generation, if not all-time, went  1 for 13 (a double) and walked twice. Trout went 2 for 14 with a walk. He slugged a solo homer off Dustin McGowan on Friday night and hit an RBI double on Sunday out of the DH slot. Trout also earned the old "Golden Sombrero" on Sunday by striking out 4 times. - Ive got to admit, I was shocked when the Baltimore Orioles traded ace closer Jim Johnson to the Oakland Athletics in the off-season, but Tommy Hunter, who I always felt was prone to giving up inopportune home runs, has stepped in without missing a beat. Hunter has 11 saves, tops in the American League, and the Orioles are 17-0 when leading after eight innings. - The New York Yankees pitching depth is being push right to the brink. Ivan Nova is gone for the season. Michael Pineda, who was first suspended, is now gone for another week or two with a muscle strain. That would serious impair most staffs, but now the Yankees will have to get by without C.C Sabathia.Hes gone on the 15-day disabled list with right knee inflammation. Its the same knee he had meniscus surgery on in 2010. You have to start wondering if its the beginning of the end for C.C.  He was 3-4 this season with a 5.28 ERA and also leads the American League with 10 homers allowed, including three in the final game he pitched before going on the DL. I wonder if theyve got Andy Pettittes number on speed dial. - At the risk of beating the proverbial dead horse, you wonder where the Blue Jays would be if they could have convinced Ervin Santana to sign with them rather than the Atlanta Braves. In six starts with the Braves, Santana has made five quality starts. Hes 4-0 with a 1.99 ERA, with 43 strikeouts, just nine walks and only two home runs allowed. The Brave,s riding a three-game win streak, are in first place in the NL East, two games up on the Miami Marlins. - Kudos to White Sox captain Paul Konerko, who, like Derek Jeter, is in the final year of his career. Konerko slugged his first home run and 435th of his career on Saturday and, thus, moved into 43rd place on the all-time list just ahead of Juan Gonzalez and Andruw Jones. Cheap Jerseys . ST. LOUIS -- Bill Self gathered his team around the bench late in Fridays game against Eastern Kentucky, one that had grown a bit too close for comfort for the second-seeded Jayhawks. His team had gone back to chucking up jumpers, the scrappy Ohio Valley Conference champions had regained the lead, and thoughts of Mercers upset of Duke earlier in the day were on everyones mind. "I thought we responded as a group," Self said. The Jayhawks resumed pounding away inside out of the timeout, slowly took control down the stretch and pulled away for an 80-69 victory in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Andrew Wiggins of Vaughan, Ont., had 19 points for the Jayhawks (25-9), who will play No. 10 seed Stanford on Sunday in the South Regional. Jamari Traylor added 17 points and 14 rebounds, Perry Ellis had 14 points and 13 boards and Tarik Black finished with 12 points as Kansas dominated in the paint. "Our main focus on the game was to get in there and pound them," Traylor said. Even without 7-footer Joel Embiid, who is out for the weekend with a back injury. Glenn Cosey hit five 3-pointers and had 17 points for the 15th-seeded Colonels (24-10), who have lost all eight of their NCAA tournament games. Tarius Johnson and Eric Stutz finished with 15 points apiece, but second-leading scorer Corey Walden was held to four points before fouling out. "Corey is a very important part of our team," Colonels coach Jeff Neubauer said. "With that being said, thats not an excuse. Kansas really played great." In the second half, perhaps. Certainly not in the first. Like a swarm of gnats, the smaller guards of Eastern Kentucky made life miserable for the turnover-prone Jayhawks in the first 20 minutes. Kansas had more turnovers (10) by the midway point than field goal attempts (9), and at one juncture turned it over on six of eight possessions. Most of those miscues turned into easy points at the other end. The Colonels, buoyed by their trademark 3-point shooting, raced out to a 23-14 lead, silencing a heavily pro-Jayhawks crowd and even making some fans out of New Mexico and Stanford folks. "Our defence is focused on turning people over and being aggressive," Stutz said. "In that first half, thats what got us our lead." It wasnt until the first of two rim-rattling dunks by Wiggins off alley-oop passes that Kansas showed some life. The second came during an 8-0 flurry that gave the Big 12 champions a 28-27 lead with just over a minute to play, their first since the opening minute of the game. The Jayhawks have grown accustomed to tussles with lower seeds, of course. Just last year, they trailed No. 16 seed Western Kentucky at halftime before pulling away down the stretch. It looked like Kansas would pull away again Friday, scoring on its first seven trips down court and building a 45-38 lead. The turnovers suddenly came to a stop -- after 13 in the first half, the Jayhawks had just one in the second -- and Eastern Kentucky was suddenly on the ropes. But rather than continue to pound away inside, where the Jayhawks were having so much success, they reverted to missing jump shots. The Colonels took advantage with a 10-0 run, and Self called a red-faced timeout rather than risk pulling out his hair. "We knew that anything could happen," the Jayhawks Conner Frankamp said. "We were down, we tried to stay poised and not get too rattled, and just tried to make the easy play, because we felt like we could score pretty good down low." Once they were reminded of that fact. Kansas went back inside out of the timeout, dumping the ball to a big man or driving to the basket. The Jayhawks regained the lead at 59-56 on Wayne Seldens free throw and Traylors putback dunk, and then kept turning back every 3-pointer that Eastern Kentucky managed to rattle home. "Just our mentality (changed)," Wiggins said. "We were tougher on the ball. We knew against the defence of this team, we had to make good decisions, great plays and throw it inside." When the final seconds ticked away, and the Jayhawks were assured of advancing, Self slowly walked to the scorers table to shake hands with his Eastern Kentucky counterpart. He exhaled deeply as he stuck out his hand, and the first words he said were, "Great game." "They played great. They played loose and gave us everything we wanted," he said later. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Kemba Walker said the most notable transformation between this years Charlotte Bobcats and teams of the past is now they expect to win games. "Thats what it is," Walker said. "We go into games knowing that we have a chance. We have the players and we have the character. Thats the difference." The Bobcats went 28-120 in their previous two seasons, but a renewed sense of confidence and determination is paying off. Well, that and a having a big man who can dominate in the low post. Centre Al Jefferson had a season-high 26 points, Walker nearly had a triple double and the Bobcats overcame an 18-point deficit to escape with a 111-110 overtime over the Milwaukee Bucks for their fourth victory in the past five games Monday night. Walker had 25 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, and Anthony Tolliver had 12 points on four 3-pointers as the Bobcats avenged a hard-to-swallow loss at home Saturday night against the Utah Jazz. Rookie Cody Zeller added a career-high 12 points for the Bobcats (14-15) in what coach Steve Clifford called his best NBA game. Jefferson told Walker this summer that he was signing as a free agent with the Bobcats because he expected to win games. He didnt want to play for a cellar dweller. "I told him Im not going to get used to losing," Jefferson said. "We want to try to turn things around. So far, so good." Its the third time in the last four games the Bobcats have come back from at least 16 points down to win. "We dont like getting down that early, but it happens," Walker said. "We are showing our resiliency. We are showing that when we get down, were not out. Were going to keep fighting. The game is never over, especially in this league." Brandon Knight had 26 points and 14 assists to lead the Bucks (6-22), who have lost five of their last six games. The Bucks had a chance to tie in overtime off an inbounds play with 1.6 seconds left, but officials ruled Khris Middletons foot was on the line and his jumper counted as two points instead of three. "I didnt know where I was," said Middleton, who had 19 points. "It was a good play and a good shot, but obviously my foot was on the line. Anybody wants that situation. I just caught it and shot it." It was Charlottes third victory this season against Milwaukee, although this one was much closer than the previous two.dddddddddddd The Bobcats beat the Bucks twice in November by 24 and 16 points. But it was Milwaukee that jumped out to a 35-17 lead in the second quarter by dominating the boards. Charlottes starters were 6 of 20 from the field at one point before Jefferson started to get hot toward the end of the second quarter and helped the Bobcats trim the lead to 54-52 at the break. The teams entered the fourth quarter tied, but Tolliver knocked down his fourth 3-pointer with 4:02 left on the clock to give Charlotte a 96-94 lead. The Bucks would cut the lead to one with 35 seconds left before Walker hit a pull-up jumper from 13 feet with 16 seconds left. After a timeout, Middleton missed a 3-pointer, but O.J. Mayo grabbed the loose rebound and knocked down a 25-footer to send the game into overtime. In the extra period, the Bobcats took a one-point lead late on a free throw by Jefferson. The Bucks had a chance to take the lead but Middleton missed a jumper and Walker grabbed his ninth rebound of the game. Walker knocked down two free throws with 1.6 seconds left to push the lead to 111-108. Milwaukees last ditch effort fell short when Middletons jumper at the buzzer from the right corner went in, but was ruled a two-pointer. Replays showed his foot was on the line. "We just have to get over the hump," Bucks coach Larry Drew said. "Were knocking at the door. We just have to get over the hump. Were putting ourselves in position. Like I told the guys, we can have good stretches and then we have breakdowns. Bad shots are just as good as a turnover. Particularly on the road. You have to be disciplined enough to get good shots." The Bobcats had a season-high 10 3-pointers including a 4-for-4 effort by Tolliver, who took over as the starter after Jeffery Taylor tore his Achilles tendon last week. NOTES: The Bobcats announced that Taylor had surgery to repair a torn right Achilles tendon and is expected to miss six to nine months. ... Jefferson has scored in double digits in 16 straight games for the Bobcats. ... Former North Carolina Tar Heel P.J. MANCHESTER, England -- As statements of intent go, it couldnt have been much bigger. "If we only consider this season," Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini said, "there is just one club in Manchester -- and its ours." That comment -- an eye-catching one from a coach usually so reserved in front of the media -- was made last month ahead of a Champions League game against Barcelona. To some, it was a mere statement of fact, with City 12 points ahead of United in the Premier League at the time and still in contention for trophies on four fronts. To others, it was unnecessary goading. And it no doubt will have hit a nerve over at Old Trafford, at a club that is the reigning English champion and had ruled football in the city for the past three decades. For that reason, United may take even more pleasure than usual if it can beat City in Tuesdays Manchester derby at Old Trafford. "Well, Manchester United had lots and lots of seasons of domination," Moyes said Monday, when asked about Pellegrinis comment. "I dont think if I was a manager I would have turned round and necessarily said that we were the only club in Manchester because football does change, it goes in cycles." "I think its important for us to show the level weve got," Moyes added, "and that were not as far away as many people would have us." For the first time in a generation, City will head across town as the favourite to beat its fiercest rival at Old Trafford. United is down in seventh place in the standings after a turbulent first season under Moyes and City, to many, is the team most likely to be raising the Premier League trophy on May 11. Pellegrinis side is six points behind first-place Chelsea with three games in hand. If it wins its remaining 11 games, City cannot be stopped. "We always expect to go and win," said a confident Pellegrini, whose first Manchester derby ended in a 4-1 victory for his side in September. "Its not just because Manchester United has had a difficult season (that) we are going to go there and win." That derby defeat was Uniteds first crushing loss under Moyes this season -- and a few more have followed over the next six months. But what a difference a week has made for the United manager. He woke last Monday to scathing headlines after an embarrassing 3-0 home loss to Liverpool, with suggestions abound that his time could be up if United was eliminated from the Champions League. Seven days later and bolstered by two victories in a four-day span that kept the team in Europe and got it back on track in the league, Moyes was clicking his fingers as he walked cheerily through the clubs training complex and sitting a little comfier in his chair at the pre-match news conference. Its been that kind of season for Alex Fergusons replacement -- a massive low one week followed by a big high the next. Theres been no consistency and of the many alarming statistics to blight Moyes short reign, one perhaps stands out -- United has just one win this campaign against a team in the current top nine. "We want to try to perform better in the bigger games than weve done, Ive got no doubt about that," said Moyes, whose team is 18 points behind Chelsea. "Ive got no doubt it will improve, and I want us to show were still in there fighting." It will then be back to business once the puck drops as the two clubs battle for key points in their respective playoff races. Watch the game live on TSN Canadiens and listen on TSN Radio 690 starting at 7:30pm et. Roy, of course, was a third-round pick by the Canadiens franchise in the 1984 draft and spent his first 10-plus seasons with Montreal before his infamous trade to Colorado in December of 1995 after a fallout with then head coach Mario Tremblay. During his time with the Habs, Roy won a pair of Conn Smythe Trophies and Stanley Cup titles in 1986 and 1993. He also won two Cups and another Conn Smythe award with the Avalanche. Roy has since had his No. 33 jersey retired by the Canadiens and faced Montreal for the first time as a coach when the Avalanche picked up a 4-1 victory at home on Nov. 2. It was Colorados fourth straight win over the Habs and it has also won its past two in Montreal. Roy admitted after Sundays win over the Ottawa Senators that he hadnt been looking ahead to this matchup. "Now Im going to think about it, but before that I was not really focusing on this," said Roy. "Ive been talking to our players that I want a partnership with them. I want us to focus on what we have to do every night and take it one day at a time. I have to do the same thing as them. "I have a lot of respect for the Montreal organization and I have a lot of respect for the fans in Montreal. They were a big part of my career, my 10 years there (were) outstanding, and now that were going to play them Im just going to try and approach it as a hockey game." The big storyline for both clubs isnt the reunion as much as the chase for playoff positioning. Colorado is second in the Central Division with 93 points, one ahead of the Chicago Blackhawks and eight back of the St. Louis Blues. Montreal, meanwhile, is tied for second in the Atlantic Division with the Tampa Bay Lightning, a distant 16 points behind the Boston Bruins. However, the Canadiens also are only one point ahead of the fourth-place Toronto Maple Leafs. Habs goaltender Carey Price said on Monday that the club needs to focus on the game and not the return of Roy.dddddddddddd "(He) is obviously a special player, when it comes to this franchise. But at the end of the day its not about that. Its about our team versus theirs on the ice and right now were in desperation mode trying to pick up points," said Price, though he did admit that Roy was one of his favorite goaltenders. "He was the favorite among many in my generation. Its pretty exciting to have the opportunity to play against him, indirectly I guess." Price missed Montreals first eight games after the Winter Olympic break having suffered a lower-body injury while helping lead Canada to a second straight gold medal. He finally returned to action on Saturday in a 5-4 overtime win against the Ottawa Senators, then did not make his clubs trip to Buffalo to get extra rest. Instead, Dustin Tokarski played in his 10th NHL game and notched a 29-save shutout, the first of his career, in a 2-0 win over the Sabres. He helped Montreal to its second straight win following a three-game slide. "The main thing is the two points," Tokarski said. "It was just a little icing on the cake with the shutout." Dale Weise and Brendan Gallagher scored the goals for the Habs. Price will get the start tonight and is 0-2-1 with a 3.61 goals against average versus the Avalanche. Backup netminder Jean- Sebastien Giguere will get the start for the Avs in what may be his last game played in his home town. The Montreal-born Giguere is 8-3-1 against the Canadiens with a 2.49 GAA. Colorado has won seven of its last nine and notched a 3-1 triumph over Ottawa on Sunday. Andre Benoit, Nick Holden and John Mitchell supplied the goals and Semyon Varlamov made 38 saves. Varlamov came within six seconds of a shutout before getting beat on a one- time blast from the point by Ottawas Mika Zibanejad. "He played so well ... The guys wanted to get the shutout for (Varlamov), but they made a great play," said Roy. Forward Matt Duchene collected two assists as Colorado played a fourth game in a row without Paul Stastny due to a back issue. ' ' '

The Ottawa SenatorsThe Sens had a golden opportunity to win the cup in 2007. After beating the Pittsburgh Penguins, New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres all in five games, the Senators would square off in the Cup Final against the Anaheim Ducks. It was a great time for the city of Ottawa as it was their first time being in the Cup final since 1927. Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson carried the Sens throughout the playoffs, along with the goaltending of Ray Emery. The Sens could not handle the Ducks in the Cup final though, who had forwards like Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Teemu Selanne. The Ducks also had a solid shutdown line, a lethal defence duo of Chris Pronger and Scott Niedermayer, and a world class goalie in Jean-Sebastien Giguere. The Sens would lose to the Ducks in five games which would conclude their best run at the cup since the Habs won in 1993.Watch a tribute to their run here.Toronto Maple LeafsYes, the Toronto Maple Leafs have had a solid playoff run since the Habs won in 1993, and it almost got them in the Cup Final. The year was 2002 and the Leafs defeated the Islanders and the Senators in the opening rounds. They would play the Conference Final against a team that they matched up pretty well against, the Carolina Hurricanes. The Leafs had an incredible goaltender in Curtis Joseph, and classic players like Mats Sundin, Gary Roberts and Darcy Tucker. Sundin and Tucker actually missed most of the first two rounds with injuries, so when they returned in the Eastern Conference Final, most Toronto fans were predicting their team would finally play for the Cup for the first time since 1967.The Leafs seemed to run out of gas and couldnt handle the Hurricanes, who got great goaltending from Arturs Irbe, and tons of production out of forwards like Rod BrindAmour, Erik Cole, and Jeff ONeill. The Leafs would lose in dramatic fashion at home in Game 6 in overtime. Sundin tied the game with the goalie pulled before the eventual season-ending goal by the Hurricanes. Mark Streit and Jacob Voracek also scored and Steve Mason made 20 saves for the Flyers, who had 11 losses and two ties in the series since beating the Sharks on Dec. 21, 2000. Sharks rookie Matt Nieto scored twice in the first period for his first career multigoal game, but that lead was erased in a flash early in the third period when Antti Niemi was sent to the bench as San Jose lost for the fourth time in five games. The Sharks have just four goals in those five games but were in position to get the win before the Flyers took advantage of shaky goaltending by Niemi and lacklustre overall play from San Jose to set a franchise record with their 10th win this season when trailing in the third period. Read started the onslaught when his shot on the rush deflected off defenceman Matt Irwins stick to tie the game 1:11 into the third. The Flyers took the lead just 1:18 later when Niemi gave up a big rebound on Erik Gustafssons point shot that went right to Raffl in the slot. A neutral-ice turnover by Irwin led to Girouxs 18th goal on a shot that deflected off Niemis glove, stunning the home crowd 1:27 after Philadelphia took the lead. Giroux also set up Voraceks late goall that sealed the win, finishing the game with a goal and two assists.dddddddddddd The Flyers had controlled play since the first period but were unable to get the equalizer until early in the third. Niemi made a nice save early in the second against Wayne Simmonds, and Scott Hartnell and Gustafsson each missed the net on good chances later in the period. The Sharks almost extended their lead on a late power play but Mason robbed Brent Burns with a glove save to keep San Joses lead at 2-1 heading into the third. The teams traded power-play goals early in the first period, with Streit scoring on a point shot through a screen by Simmonds after Nieto was called for hooking in the offensive zone. Nieto more than made up for his transgression the rest of the period. With Nicklas Grossmann in the box for hooking, Irwin shot the puck into the corner from his own blue line. Tommy Wingels raced to the puck to negate an icing call and sent a perfect feed to Nieto in front of the net for the deflection on his first career power-play goal. Nieto was the recipient of another nice pass later in the period, when Burns set him up with a blind, backhand pass from the corner that led to his second goal. That gave the Sharks a 2-1 lead that lasted until the third. NOTES: Flyers D Kimmo Timonen was scratched for the second straight game with a foot injury. ... The Sharks snapped an 0-for-16 slump on the power play with Nietos first goal. ' ' '

I never had a hat trick, so it was pretty special.Allen had a big game two nights after regular Blues goalie Brian Elliott shut out Los Angeles in a 1-0 shootout loss.Weve had really good goaltending every game weve played so far this year, Hitchcock said. Any number from Sam Spence would suffice for this anticipated matchup at Lambeau Field, where the storied Packers and Cowboys will meet in the playoffs for the first time since the 1967 NFL championship, which is more commonly dubbed as the Ice Bowl. Watch the action live on CTV at Noon et/9am pt. Green Bay won that contest on the frozen tundra and is back in the playoffs for a sixth straight season. The Packers captured an NFC North title for a fourth straight season with a 12-4 record and went 8-0 at home. Packers quarterback and NFL MVP candidate Aaron Rodgers threw 25 touchdown passes to no interceptions at Lambeau Field. Rodgers led the Packers to seven wins in the last eight weeks of the regular season and will go toe-to-toe with Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Romo led Dallas to an 8-0 road ledger, throwing for 20 touchdowns to just two interceptions away from home. Sundays playoff game marks the first time a team that finished 8-0 at home during the regular season hosting a team that was 8-0 on the road during the regular season. Green Bay is well aware of Dallas success outside Big D. This will be a big challenge. Its definitely something that jumps off the stat sheet when you see eight wins on the road, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said. McCarthy has led the Packers to the playoffs in seven of his nine seasons at the helm. Packers defensive back Micah Hyde isnt as impressed with the road success. We dont pay attention to them being 8-0 on the road because they havent come here and beaten us here at Lambeau, but its going to be a tough matchup and we understand that. Nobody entered Lambeau Field and escaped with a win this season. Whether it was at Lambeau Field or elsewhere around the league, Rodgers played as well as any quarterback in the NFL. He threw for 4,381 yards with 38 TDs to just five INTs. There was a five-game stretch from Nov. 9 - Dec. 8 in which he recorded 16 touchdown strikes to zero interceptions. Rodgers, who set an NFL single-season record with a 133.2 passer rating at home, is dealing with a calf injury and is not concerned about it. The rhythm is established, the play style is established, Rodgers said. Its really working on the checks and kind of going through the plan. Thats why you need to practice. He has 477 straight pass attempts and 38 touchdown passes in a row without an interception at home, including the postseason. Rodgers doesnt get enough credit for extending plays and has two 1,000-yard receivers in Jordy Nelson (1,519) and Randall Cobb (1,287). Running back Eddie Lacy ran for 1,139 yards. Nelson had 13 touchdown catches, Cobb recorded 12 and Lacy combined for 13 (9 rushing, 4 receiving). Meanwhile, the Cowboys edged the Detroit Lions, 24-20, last Sunday in a Wild Card matchup at AT&T Stadium. They got some favorable calls from the officials and erased an early 14-0 hole to move on to the divisional round for the first time since 2009. Its how weve responded all year long, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said afterward. Romo threw for 292 yards with a pair of touchdown passes, none bigger than his eight-yard strike to Terrence Williams with 2:32 left in the game. Williams caught both of Romos touchdown passes. Dez Bryant, who led the team with 88 catches for 1,320 yards and a franchise-best 16 TDs in the regular season, was limited to 48 yards and three catches against Detroits tough defense. Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray was at it again versus the Lions with 75 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Murray is deserving of an MVP nod and led the NFL in rushing with a team-record 1,845 yards and 12 100-yard games. Murray was tied for the league lead in rushing scores with 13 and opened the season with eight straight 100-yard games for Dallas, which was second overall with 147.1 rushing yards per game. Sundays expected frigid conditions will either bring out the best in Murray, who is still dealing with a broken hand, or humble the tough runner. Either way, the Packers will be tested early on. The Dallas Cowboys run game is excellent, McCarthy said. Murray is a big- time back. Hes definitely a difference-maker. Hell definitely be a focal point for us. McCarthys Packers defeated the Cowboys, 37-36, on Dec. 15, 2013, as Lacy scored the go-ahead touchdown on a one-yard plunge with 1:31 remaining in the fourth quarter. Lacy had 141 yards on 21 carrries, while Murray ran for 134 yards and a score on 18 touches.dddddddddddd Romo threw for 358 yards to go along with two TDs and two INTs. Bryant caught 11 passes for 153 yards and a score. Rodgers did not play in that one because of a fractured collarbone. Dallas and Green Bay will meet for the seventh time in the postseason, where the Cowboys have won the last four matchups. The Cowboys lead the all-time series by a 16-15 count, including the playoffs. The Packers are 9-4 versus the Cowboys at home, including postseason play. Green Bay, which has won 13 NFL titles, is 16-5 all-time at home during the postseason, while Dallas has a 34-25 mark overall in the playoffs. WHAT TO WATCH FOR The weather conditions should have zero effect on the outcome of this game, unless its a blizzard. Still, players will be out on the field in short sleeves braving the cold, mostly the offensive and defensive linemen. Its probably going to be cold there. I have a pretty good feeling about that, Garrett said. Whatever the numbers say, we have to deal with those elements. Thats what happens when you go up to Green Bay this time of year. Keeping warm is key and both offenses have the talent and speed to break a sweat. Both secondaries will be tested, none more than the Cowboys defensive backfield. Cornerbacks Brandon Carr and Orlando Scandrick, and safeties Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox have to slow down Nelson and Cobb. The Cowboys did a nice job on Detroit star wideout Calvin Johnson, who had 85 yards on five catches and no touchdowns. Now they have their hands full with Nelson and Cobb. The duo became the first teammates in league lore to post at least 1,200 yards and 12 receiving TDs in the same season. This is a fun team to be on and the guys believe in each other, fight for each other and we stick together, Rodgers said. Winning the division was important as was getting that home playoff game. Were 8-0 at home so we want to keep that streak alive. This is what we love to do. I love the competition. Were all passionate about this game. The Cowboys have to pressure Rodgers and keep Lacy from setting the tempo. Rodgers can do that on his own and it will be lights out if he has the time to sit back and pick apart the defense (just ask Philadelphia). The Cowboys sacked Matthew Stafford three times last week. Jeremy Mincey had a sack and led the team with six. Mincey and linebacker Rolando McClain are nursing head injuries, while linebacker Anthony Hitchens is dealing with an ankle injury. All three are expected to be ready for this crucial playoff matchup. Green Bay is in the same shoes defensively facing a tough runner and a dynamic wide receiver. The Cowboys proved they can strike when Bryant is having trouble getting open, as Williams burned the Lions twice. Even tight end Jason Witten wasnt a factor. Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers has plenty of respect for Dallas. It starts with their running game. Youve got to be able to play both (run and pass) against these guys. Theyre not a one-dimensional team, Capers said. This is the best test weve had. This will be a challenge. Packers linebacker Clay Matthews led the team with 11 sacks, safety Morgan Burnett had 129 tackles and cornerbacks Sam Shields and Casey Hayward each had three interceptions. Green Bays 3-4 defensive scheme could struggle against Murray, and rookie safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix must be ready for Bryant. Veteran linebacker Julius Peppers plays on the outside and can still wreak havoc in the twilight of his career. He had seven sacks across 16 games. OVERALL ANALYSIS Dallas owner Jerry Jones said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a rabid Cowboys fan, is a part of the teams mojo. Christie was in the owners box in a huge win against Philadelphia and also last week versus Detroit. Hes part of our mojo, Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. I want him there all the way. Ill tell you, if hes got enough mojo to pull this thing out, he ought to be looked at as President of the United States. The Cowboys have been perfect on the road, but the Packers are unbeaten at home. A black cat, lucky rabbits foot, knocking on wood, crossing fingers or perhaps a wishbone cant save the Cowboys now, and neither will the presence of Christie, who has drawn the ire of the Tri-State area for his rooting interest. May the best team win ... and the Packers will. Its great to be playing at home, we prefer to play here, McCarthy said This is playoff football and everything changes. But this is definitely where we want to play. ' ' '

VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver Whitecaps added Uruguayan midfielders/strikers Sebastian Fernandez and Nicolas Mezquida to their roster Wednesday. Fernandez joins the Whitecaps on a one-year loan with a transfer option while Mezquida was acquired via transfer, both from Uruguayan side Boston River. Both deals are pending receipt of their International Transfer Certificates, Canadian work permits and visas. "Sebastian and Nicolas are exciting young attacking players with a lot of potential," Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said in a statement. "Both players like to play with the ball on the ground and are not afraid to attack defenders one-on-one with pace." Fernandez, 24, joins the Whitecaps after capturing the 2013 Peruvian Primera Division championship with Universitario de Deportes while on loan from Liga MX side Chiapas FC. The five-foot-seven 165-pound Fernandez scored five times in 26 appearances for Universitario, with two of those goals coming in the playoffs. Mezquida, 22, comes to Vancouver having last been a member of Uruguayan Primera Division side Centro Atletico Fenix. The five-foot-six, 150-pound Mezquida joined Fenix in March 2012 and played parts of two seasons with the club. During that time, he was loaned to Uruguays second tier side Rampla Juniors Futbal Club, where he scored seven goals in 24 appearances. Anaheim Ducks Shirts . This week, they discuss the return of Mario Balotelli to the Premier League, the achievement of Mone Davis, the retirement of J-S Giguere, and Alex Kovalevs controversial comments. Cathal Kelly, The Globe and Mail: My thumb is up for the return of footballs enfant terrible, Mario Balotelli, to the Premier League. At 24, hes no longer an enfant. And since being jettisoned to Italy two years ago, hes been more terrible than terrible. But no player in the world fascinates as much as this man - a genuine, winsome oddball. This is the guy who once lit his house ablaze while shooting fireworks out a bathroom window, and decided to breach the gates at a womens prison just to see what it looked like. Balotelli can also play a bit. In Liverpool, hell be a cult favourite a half-hour after he arrives. If he scores a few, hell be a legend. This is still a deal that could prove disastrous - the always erratic Balotelli can be just as dangerous to his own team as he is to others. But without him, the Premiership had become a dull place. Whether or not it works out in terms of results, I promise you itll work out for us. Steve Simmons, Sun Media: My thumb is up to Mone Davis, the 13-year-old from south Philly, who throws like a girl, and for the first time ever that is a compliment. Mo-Ne not only went to the Little League World Series, she all but owned it, becoming the first young lady to toss a shutout in the 67-year history of the event. In doing so, she captured the attention and the hearts of baseball fanss everywhere, along with many major leaguers who were astounded by what they saw with a teenage girl throwing 70 miles per hour.dddddddddddd Her team didnt win it all but she won the vaunted cover of Sports Illustrated and with it the belief that one day we might see a woman pitching in the major leagues. Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated: My thumb is up to the retiring Jean-Sébastien Giguère, Conn Smythe winner, Stanley Cup champion and last active member of the Hartford Whalers. He had fabulous playoff runs with Anaheim in 2003 and 2007, protecting his net like a troll guarding his bridge, but his eight games with Hartford most interests me today. With Giguères retirement, we finally have a chance to free ourselves of that Whalers goal song that is seared into our brains. You know it. You hate it. You never have forgotten it. Brass Bonanza, Jiggys swansong. Paul Hollingsworth, TSN: My thumb is down to Alex Kovalev for his ripping of PK Subban. To preface. I like Kovalev. As a player, he was always a guilty pleasure - who admittedly left me wanting more. And the work hes done for charity in this country deserves our respect. But this week, AK-27 said PK-76 was "a street hockey player", and "too risky and overpaid". Well, it takes one to know one. Kovalev was a world class talent but also a chronic underachiever. Yes he could stickhandle in a phone booth, and a useful skill that is! But he who made $54 million in his career is the "last" player who should ever question "any" other players ability and earnings. ' ' '

TORONTO -- Kevin Pillar had a chat with slugger Jose Bautista as they practised their swings shortly before the Toronto Blue Jays took on the Minnesota Twins on Monday night. Bautista offered some words of encouragement for the backup outfielder and told him to be aggressive at the plate. It proved to be sage advice. Pillar hit a one-out flare to right field off Casey Fien that drove in pinch-runner Erik Kratz with the winning run to give the Blue Jays a 5-4 walkoff victory at Rogers Centre. "It was a slider off the plate and I was just able to nestle it in somewhere," Pillar said. "And it feels good." Earlier in the inning, Pillar made a miscue in left field by diving for Kurt Suzukis sinking liner. He couldnt come up with the ball and it rolled by him, allowing the Twins to move within a run. Eduardo Escobar followed with a blooper off closer Casey Janssen that landed just inside the left-field line and brought Suzuki home with the tying run. "Baseball is a weird game," Pillar said. "You get a chance to make up for a mistake that you made maybe in the previous inning or early in the game. I was fortunate enough to make that happen." Edwin Encarnacion had staked Toronto (39-26) to an early lead with a three-run homer in the first inning off Minnesota starter Ricky Nolasco. Jose Reyes added a solo homer in the fifth inning for the Blue Jays, who lead the major leagues with 91 home runs. With the win, the Blue Jays remained 5 1/2 games ahead of second-place Baltimore in the American League East division standings. The Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-0 Monday. It was Torontos 16th victory in its last 20 games. "Weve been playing good baseball but you still need to win some of those games like that," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "For the longest time, everything has been going our way. Tonight things didnt go our way but we still managed to come out and pull out a nice win." Minnesota (29-33) scored a pair of quick runs off Toronto starter R.A. Dickey before many fans had taken their seats on a glorious spring evening. Danny Santana hit his first career leadoff home run and Brian Dozier followed with a rainbow shot just inside the foul pole in left field. Dickey settled down after that, retiring 11 straight batters at one point before Josh Willinghams triple in the sixth inning. The Twins loaded the bases but Dustin McGowan came on and got Trevor Plouffe to ground into a double play to end the threat. Janssen (1-0), who blew his second save of the season, gave up three hits in the ninth inning. With the crowd deflated after the Twins tied the game, Minnesota pitcher Matt Guerrier (0-1) walked Dioner Navarro to open the bottom of the ninth. Kratz came in to pinch-run, moved to second on a Reyes single and then scored with room to spare. "You walk the leadoff guy, you give yourself pretty much a mess and anything can happen after that," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. Pillar, who entered the game in the ninth as a defensive replacement for Melky Cabrera, said his defensive miscue was on his mind when he came to the plate. Thinking about his chat with Bautista, Pillar swung and missed the first two times before making contact. "Its a huge roller-coaster of emotions right there," he said. "I guess thats baseball. Theres a lot of ups and downs. You have to find a way to get back centred and deal with the task at hand." Notes: Encarnacion leads the Blue Jays with 20 homers this season. Reyes now has four homers this year. Dozier has 13 home runs while Santana has gone deep twice. ... Dickey allowed five hits, two earned runs, two walks and had three strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. ... Nolasco allowed seven hits, four earned runs and a pair of walks. He had six strikeouts. ... Morales signed a one-year, prorated contract Sunday. The Cuban slugger hit .277 with 23 homers and 80 RBIs with Seattle last season. ... The Twins have hit four leadoff home runs this season. ... Canada kept their undefeated streak going by beating Great Britain 9-6 in womens curling to push their record to 3-0 at the Sochi Olympics on Wednesday. Canada, led by Jennifer Jones, faced their first real test coming off dominant wins over 9-2 over China and 9-3 over Sweden on Monday and Tuesday respectively.  Eve Muirhead, the 23-year old skip who led Scotland to a 2013 World Championship, followed through with expectations to lead Great Britain to a strong challenge against Canada. The two skips battled fiercely right into the final end. The skips battled hard where Jones tossed 85% and Muirhead went for 83%. There was very little separation between the opponents early in the match and that was the continued trend throughout.  Up 8-6 going into the final end, Canada looked to be into as Great Britain was looking at scoring a double until Jones got a clutch take out, leaving just one stone near the button. Muirhead had the hammer with :30 remaining, but the result of her triple take out attempt went awry, resulting in a steal of one for Canada. The biggest Canadian highlight was the moment right before the conclusion of the fifth end where Muirheads final stone sat just short of the rings to play guard for a potential steal of two.But Jones stuck back, shooting a major take out which earned three points to bring it to 6-3 lead for Canada. Britain pulled it closed after six ends, bringing it to 6-5, but Jones was able to to keep distance securing a single in the seventh end to stay up by two. Muirhread came out of a tough eighth end, finishing with two of the four stones in the house but only could muster one point. Canada continues in the round robin on Thursday as they take on Switzerland. Austin Riley Jersey . CHICAGO - Jared Allen figured the Chicago Bears were bound to retaliate, that they could only take so much after getting knocked around. They didnt exactly treat his former team as a punching bag. They just played well enough to put their implosion on hold. Jay Cutler threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns, and the Bears won for just the second time in seven games by beating the Minnesota Vikings 21-13 on Sunday. Ryan Mundy intercepted Teddy Bridgewaters 29-yard pass in the end zone in the closing minute, and the Bears hung on for the win after suffering two of the worst blowout losses in franchise history. I think we kind of rallied around each other, said Allen, the five-time Pro Bowl defensive end who signed with Chicago after spending six seasons with Minnesota. I think the sense of urgency was there. You can only get beat up so many times before you fight back. People questioned the character of the locker room. We know what we have. Alshon Jeffery had 135 yards receiving and a touchdown catch. Brandon Marshall added 90 yards and two TD receptions, including a 4-yarder in the fourth quarter that made it an 11-point game. Matt Forte ran for 117 yards. Allen had a sack against his former team, and the Bears (4-6) prevailed after joining the 1923 Rochester Jeffersons as the only teams to give up 50 or more points in consecutive games with blowouts at New England and Green Bay. But it was a different story against the Vikings (4-6). The Bears gave up a season-low 243 yards while racking up 468, and they picked up their first win at Soldier Field after dropping their first three there. Minnesota got a 48-yard end-around by Andrew Sendejo on a fake punt to set up an early touchdown but little else on the way to its seventh straight loss in Chicago. Bridgewater threw for just 158 yards and touchdown, and the Vikings came up short after winning two in a row. They have been under a lot of heat, they stepped up today, played a lot better than weve seen in the last couple of weeks, Vikings centre John Sullivan said. Marshall made it an 11-point game when he posted Josh Robinson in the end zone like a basketball player and leaped to snag a 4-yard pass to make it 21-10. That capped a drive in which the Bears converted twice on a fourth-and-1 on runs by Forte— at the Minnesota 27 and at the 6. The Vikings then drove to the Chicago 8 before settling for a 26-yard field goal by Blair Walsh with just over four minutes left. They were threatening to tie it again. But Mundys interception in the right side of the end zone on a pass intended for Charles Johnson sealed the win for Chicago on a day when there were issues with the scoreboard clock. Stadium officials were not sure what caused it to malfunction. The problems started late in the first half, although the clocks on the side were still working at that time. They were all out once the second half started, forcing the referees to keep time by hand, and stayed that way for most of the third quarter before coming back on. There were more issues in the closing minutes of the game, and Vikings coach Mike Zimmer was not happy. Its another new experience. Its hard to know because no one is telling you how much time is left, he said. Zimmer used an expletive to describe the clocks, and then apologized for his language. NFL spokesman Michael Signora said the protocol when game clocks at the stadium are not operational is for time to be kept on the field, with the side judge responsible for the game clock and the line judge also keeping the game time as a backup. The back judge is responsible for the play clock. As for what happened on the field, the Bears overcame an early 10-0 deficit to take a 14-10 halftime lead after being outscored a combined 94-7 in the first two quarters of the previous two games. They also won over a restless crowd. There were 6,472 no-shows and the 55,320 fans on hand were letting their team hear it after Bridgewater connected with Rhett Ellison for a 7-yard touchdown following Sendejos end-around with the Vikings lined up to punt late in the first quarter. But the Bears gave them something to cheer less than two minutes into the second. Jeffery caught a 27-yard touchdown from Cutler to make it a three-point game. The Bears took their first lead since their win at Atlanta on Oct. 12 with just under three minutes left in the half when Marshall hauled in Cutlers 44-yard heave. Someone said that were probably not going to have the best home-field advantage today — and rightfully so, Cutler said. We havent performed the way the fans think we should perform. We havent performed the way the players think we should. NOTES: Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph returned after missing six games with a sports hernia, but did not catch a pass. ... There was no music pumping from the stereo system, nothing but the uncomfortable quiet of a team in midst of another memorable late season collapse. "Thats a sure tell-tale sign," he said of a group in shock, down in the dumps from a losing streak numbering eight games, one that has the clubs playoff hopes dangling from the thinnest of threads. Carlyle took the day to inject a little life into what remains of those hopes. He also did a fair bit of teaching, directing, and informing, tweaks to "things that we think that are very easily correctable". He implored his forwards to "turn your [butt]" to protect the puck and adjusted the positioning of Jay McClement and Tim Gleason during one particular defensive zone drill. Carlyle may be coaching for his job in these final six games of the regular season, but beyond the uncertain question of the head coach and his status for next season is the roster retooling that seems likely to take place under the direction of GM Dave Nonis and his management team this summer. With 10 players up for free agency – including half the forward group and two top-four defenders – and the core deserving of some scrutiny after another collapse, plenty of change could and probably will be coming to the Leafs. Forwards James van Riemsdyk Tyler Bozak Phil Kessel Joffrey Lupul Nazem Kadri Nikolai Kulemin** Mason Raymond** Dave Bolland** David Clarkson Troy Bodie** Jay McClement** Jerry DAmigo* Colton Orr     Defencemen Carl Gunnarsson Dion Phaneuf Jake Gardiner* Cody Franson* Tim Gleason Morgan Rielly Paul Ranger**   Goaltenders Jonathan Bernier James Reimer* Note: *Restricted Free Agent | **Unrestricted Free Agent Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk, Dion Phaneuf, David Clarkson, Joffrey Lupul, and Tyler Bozak are all locked up until the summer of 2017 and in some cases beyond. They constitute the Toronto core along with Morgan Rielly and Jonathan Berrnier and the far less secure but high upside duo of Nazem Kadri and Jake Gardiner.dddddddddddd Considering their place in three straight collapses – all of varying degree – and ongoing struggles to defend, adjustment to the group has to be considered with only Kessel, van Riemsdyk, Bernier and Rielly seemingly off the table this offseason. Luke Schenn, once a cornerstone of that group, was jettisoned after the meltdown in 2012. Mikhail Grabovski faced the same fate via compliance buyout after Game 7 last spring. Will the summer ahead bring with it more change to the building blocks of the organization? Is a 1-2 centre punch of Bozak and Kadri strong enough to be a force in the East or are upgrades needed down the middle? Is there enough two-way stability to the current top-six (all signed long-term, save for Kadri) with little in the way of youth on the way? Can Clarkson be redeemed in year two of a whopping seven-year contract? Might the organization buy him out? Is a trade even possible? Can Lupul be a part of the solution at age 30 and beyond that?  Is the core, generally speaking, good enough to win as constructed or is a major or perhaps minor tinkering required? Beyond that core is the looming free agent bunch, of which Bolland figures to be the most intriguing. The 27-year-old began his Leaf career with a bang, posting six goals and 10 points in October. But a serious ankle injury kept him out nearly five months and muddled his status in the process. Theres value there, but at what price and what term? Can he stabilize the club at centre ice or is there a better fit elsewhere, perhaps 28-year-old Paul Statsny, also entering unrestricted free agency for the first time? Then there are the likes of Mason Raymond, Nik Kulemin, Jay McClement, Troy Bodie and Paul Ranger, all also unrestricted. McClement is useful if employed in a fourth line role, and Bodie has certainly earned himself another contract with an energetic presence. The others all have question marks with price point and fit among the concerns. Thats the entire group of bottom-six forwards, all in question to return next season. None of the three restricted free agents are certain or maybe even likely to come back next year with Jake Gardiner the likeliest of a bunch – by a good margin – that includes Cody Franson and the all-but-gone James Reimer. Torontos defence should be the top priority for upgrade followed by a forward complement that has plenty of holes in the bottom ranks (size, strength, defensive commitment among the issues) with question marks up top and down the middle as well. Nonis would be hard-pressed to bring back Carlyle if the Leafs do definitively fumble away their once certain playoff chances, but hell also have to give a long, hard look to a roster thats proven (in conjunction with that coaching staff) to be flawed and in need of improvement. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carl Edwards said NASCAR is taking the wrong approach in its effort to draw more fans to the race track. If NASCAR really wants to create better competition and higher interest in the sport, Edwards said it needs to focus on changing the setup of the cars and not the championship format. NASCAR will announce its Chase for the Sprint Cup championship format on Thursday. It is expected to be to a 16-driver field whittled down through eliminations to four drivers and a winner-take-all season finale; it would be the fourth significant change to either the points or championship format since the Chase debuted in 2004. Edwards said drivers are already doing everything they can to win and the proposed changes that NASCAR chairman Brian France laid out two weeks ago wont change that. "I dont think you can take the top 15 guys in this sport and make them race any harder for wins. I dont think you can," Edwards said Tuesday. Its a sentiment shared by 2012 champion Brad Keselowski, who initially showed public support of the new format but is now reserving judgment until he sees exactly what NASCAR wants to do. France has been adamant he wants drivers to race at 100 per cent at all times and to value winning, and he preached most of last season that the frantic, door-banging battle to the checkered flag at California between Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano is the kind of racing he wants to see. "From a drivers perspective, theres nothing left," Keselowski said Wednesday. "Theres no set of rules to make me race harder than I do." Keselowski passed on a chance to move Kyle Busch out of the lead at Watkins Glen last August in what could have been a last-ditch effort to win the race. That victory would have likely ensured Keselowski a spot in the Chase; instead, he failed to qualify and was unable to defend his championship. Keselowski also doesnt think any changes will hurt six-time champion Jimmie Johnson. "No matter what format you put out there, hes the favourite," Keselowski said. "Until thats not the case, I dont see how theres any format that could be wrote, unless its the slowest guy wins, and I dont think theyre going to do that." Edwards said taking away the downforce on cars and making the tires softer is a good place to start. He said it would go a long way toward increasing competitive racing at the front of the pack. "No matter what format we race under I cant just try harder and go up and race with the guy or pass him," Edwards said. "I think the thing we have to focus on as a sport is making sure the cars can race one another. ... Right now, if Im staring at the guy in the front window it doesnt matter if (Im racing) for a billion dollars and 10 championships -- if I cant catch him, I cant catch him." Its not necessarily that Edwards is against the format. But he said if Frances proposals -- with the emphasis on winning races to get into the Chase for the Championship -- come to fruition, it will change the way drivers approach the season. "Things will get really, really interesting around Richmond. That will be insane," Edwards said. Dale Earnhardt Jr. said he wasnt excited about the proposed changes at first, but has begun to warm to the idea. "Lets change it all. Im all for it," Earnhardt said. "A lot of times we change things for the fans, and I think the drivers are going to enjoy some of this stuff as much as the fans are." Team owner Richard Petty said proposed changes are a "PR deal" by NASCAR designed to drum up more interest in the sport. He still thinks the best drivers will come out on top regardless of the format. "They just want to shake things up," Petty said. NASCAR is essentially borrowing a page from other major sports such as the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball where teams -- or in this case, drivers -- are eliminated from playoff contention while the season climaxes with one championship event at the end of the year. Earnhardt Jr. called it a "bold, aggressive" move by NASCAR. "When you look at other forms of sport, theres an elimination factor in the playoffs that we dont have," Earnhardt said. "We, as drivers, dont feel the intensity of an elimination factor being over our shoulders every race. I feel like weve had it easy in that regard where we just tally up points. Coming down to Homestead with four guys (racing for the championship), thats crazy -- but its exciting." However, driver Ryan Newman doesnt necessarily agree with the elimination-style system. "I dont think we can take everything the NFL or NBA is doing and say, We need to do it like this because theyre doing it like that and its working," Newman said. "This is still stock car racing. This is NASCAR. A certain per cent of change is good, but we do not need to copy the playoff system." Trainer Art Sherman made no threats about the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner passing on a chance to become horse racings 12th Triple Crown winner, but he suggested it was a possibility. "Id have to leave it up to the owners," he said Sunday. "I know theyll be upset." Neither the New York State Gaming Commission nor the New York Racing Association stewards has received a request to use nasal strips in the Belmont on June 7. "If a request to use nasal strips is made, the decision on whether to permit them or not will be fully evaluated and determined by the stewards," Gaming Commission spokesman Lee Park said Sunday. Among the Gaming Commissions rules governing Belmont Park is one that states: Only equipment specifically approved by the stewards shall be worn or carried by a jockey or a horse in a race. In a post on its Twitter feed, NYRA said: "We operate under the rules set forth by (at)NYSGamingCommission." California Chrome has worn a nasal strip during his current six-race winning streak after co-owner Perry Martin wanted to try it. Sherman is based in California and said he wasnt aware that using one in New York might be a problem. He said he would talk to New York racing officials and the horses owners. Some horses, like humans, wear nasal strips to assist breathing. The colt wears the strip only during races, not training. At 1 1/2 miles, the Belmont is the longest and most grueling of the three Triple Crown races. "I think it opens up his air passage and gives him that little extra oomph that he needs, especially going a mile and a half," Sherman said. "Anytime you can have a good air passage, that means a lot for these thoroughbreds." Sherman said Martin likes to try different products and the co-owner thought a nasal strip might benefit California Chrome. "This guy, Perry Martin, he might not run if they say you cant run with a nasal strip. Hes very funny about things like that," the trainer said. "I dont know why they would ban you from wearing one. Well have to cross that bridge when we get there." Other states allow nasal strips while racing, and even some jockeys wear them. "Its something nonmedical that ccan be beneficial to a workout or a race," California-based trainer Doug ONeill said by phone.dddddddddddd "If you think your horse could use some help with their nostrils, you do it." Two years ago, ONeill trained Ill Have Another to victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with the colt wearing a nasal strip. New York officials told ONeill that his horse couldnt wear one in the Belmont. The issue became moot when Ill Have Another was scratched the day before the race because of a leg injury. "I cant imagine them being that ignorant that they would do that again," ONeill said. "New York has gotten a lot better with common sense. It seems like a more rational place now." NYRA has several new officials since 2012, including Martin Panza, the former racing secretary at now-closed Betfair Hollywood Park in California who now oversees racing operations at Belmont, Saratoga and Aqueduct. Sherman said California Chrome came out of Saturdays Preakness in good shape, emptying his feed tub after the race. The colt playfully nibbled on his leather shank outside the barn as his two front legs were washed off Sunday. A worker removed a poultice from each lower front leg, which had been applied under bandages as a precaution to protect the colts tendons. The nasal strip could prove insignificant, as did California Chromes cough that had no impact on his Preakness run. The colt has a small blister in his throat that caused him to cough last week, triggering rumours that he wouldnt run at Pimlico. Sherman thinks California Chrome will win the Triple Crown, something no horse has done since Affirmed in 1978. "I have a good feeling about it. Im really confident," he said. "They better have their running shoes on. I dont care how many fresh shooters they have. Hes the real McCoy." If California Chrome competes, the Belmont Stakes is shaping up as a possible 11-horse race, including two newcomers to the Triple Crown trail: Commissioner, sixth in the Arkansas Derby; and Tonalist, the Peter Pan Stakes winner. Other probables include the second- through fifth-place finishers in the Kentucky Derby: Commanding Curve, Danza, Wicked Strong and Samraat. Intense Holiday, 12th in the Derby, is on the list. Three Preakness runners could return: Ride On Curlin (second), Social Inclusion (third) and Kid Cruz (eighth). ' ' '
