Fayetteville, AR (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Qualls scored 22 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for No. 25 Arkansas as they pulled away in the second half for an 89-73 win over North Texas. Only leading by two at halftime, a balanced attack helped the Razorbacks (5-0) build their lead. Rashad Madden and Anthlon Bell each chipped in 15, and Madden added five rebounds and a game-high seven assists. The Mean Green (4-2) were able to stay in the game by shooting 10-of-20 from beyond the arc. T.J. Taylor paced North Texas with 16 points, and Jordan Williams contributed 15. HOUSTON -- Matt Schaub has managed to keep his starting job, and the beleaguered Houston quarterback vowed to turn things around this week. "I need to be better," he said, "and Ill be the first to admit that." Houston coach Gary Kubiak said Wednesday that Schaub would start on Sunday against St. Louis, but added that staying with him wasnt an easy choice. "It was a tough decision -- real tough," Kubiak said. "But I feel like its the best thing for our football team this weekend." Schaub has had a terrible three weeks. He has thrown six interceptions -- three of them returned for touchdowns -- and the Texans have dropped three straight. Kubiak said Monday that Schaub remained the starter, but added that he would evaluate the quarterback situation this week. After two days of deliberating, he decided to stick with the 10-year veteran. "A lot of thought went into it, a lot of evaluations and things going on, but I thought it was the best decision going into this game," Kubiak said. Schaub will have to direct the offence this week without tight end Owen Daniels, who was placed on the injured reserve/designated for return list with a broken fibula in his right leg and will be out eight weeks. Schaubs recent poor play has prompted vitriol and a call to bench him in favour of backup T.J. Yates from a segment of Texans fans. Some people have recently began driving by his home and taking photos, causing Schaub to call NFL security. He admitted to contacting security about the drive-by photos, but denied a report of a fan going to his door and shouting obscenities Tuesday night.dddddddddddd. Schaub said despite the incidents, hes happy at his home and has no plans to move to a gated community. He was troubled by the situation and acknowledged being worried about the safety of his wife and three young daughters. But said theres a simple solution to ending the harassment. "Its the world we live in," he said. "Theres passionate fans out there for better or worse and I understand that ... you hate for it to come to that because were better than that as a society and a community. But its the nature of what we do. The only thing that can correct that is going out and beating the St. Louis Rams this week." Kubiak has expressed concern that such a brutal stretch may have shaken his quarterbacks confidence. When asked about that, the 32-year-old Schaub denied any struggles in that area. "Not one bit," he said as he stood perfectly straight looking even taller than his already imposing 6-foot-5. "Im supremely confident in my abilities and what I can do on the football field. I just need to get back to being conscious of the details and being technically sound." Kubiak, a former quarterback, has talked often with Schaub this week, but knows that talking doesnt change anything. He has to see results on the field. "Youre OK when you start playing better and your team starts winning games," he said. "Thats when you get OK. I understand that. Im just trying to help him work through it. Im trying to do ... everything I can, from my perspective as a coach, to help a player work through something." ' ' '

Mauricio Pochettino says his Tottenham team believe they can win the Premier League but reckons they are fighting with Leicester and five other sides for the title. Spurs are second in the table, five points behind Claudio Ranieris side with seven games remaining, and lead north London rivals Arsenal in third by six points ahead of their trip to Liverpool on Saturday Night Football, live on Sky Sports 1.However, Pochettino has dismissed claims that the likes of Arsenal and the Manchester sides are out of the title race and says the top seven in the Premier League are realistic contenders. For me, at the moment, we are competing with different teams and not only Leicester, he said. Arsenal, Manchester City, United, West Ham and Southampton all have the possibility because mathematically it is possible.I think seven games is a lot. Its a lot of points and you never know what will happen in football. We always need to be focused in every game. It is not only a race between Leicester and us or Arsenal. There are a lot of teams involved. I am no politician. I am strong and friendly when I need to be but I am realistic. In football, a lot can happen. Pochettino explains why England are on the verge of something special We believe we can win the title but other teams have the possibility to fight with us and I am realistic.Despite that, Pochettino says Leicester are worthy leaders at this stage of the season after a remarkable campaign. We need to give credit to Leicester, he said. Today they are on the top because they deserve to be on the top. From the beginning of the season, they were fantastic. We cannot take the credit from them. Leicester celebrate after their 1-0 victory at Tottenham earlier this season We are in the position - a very good position - but we cannot compare with another team, in this case Leicester. We need to fight in the last seven games and it is important for us to try to fight until the end of the season with the possibility to achieve big things. There is the chance to win the title and also to be in the top four, which would be a very big achievement for the club. Pochettino says Arsenal are not out of the title race Ahead of the Liverpool clash, Pochettino revealed Harry Kane is set to play without his face mask after leaving it off at training on Thursday. The striker has been wearing it for more than a month after breaking his nose against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup but has still scored six goals in that time for club and country. Its good because today he trained without the mask and this is good for him, Pochettino said. Its good because it always disturbs you a little bit to play with this on your face. Harry Kane should be without his face mask against Liverpool Jurgen Klopp began his time at Liverpool with a 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane last October and, ahead of the return fixture this weekend, Pochettino called the German a great manager. He added: I am not at Liverpool so it is difficult to give my opinion [on how Klopp is adapting]. When you arrive in the middle of the season, you need to settle your ideas and that is always difficult. Jurgen Klopps first match in charge of Liverpool was against Tottenham You need your players to be available and to help you but it is difficult to give my opinion. But Klopp is a great manager and showed at a different club he had a good experience. He can develop his way. Daley had a goal and an assist, Kari Lehtonen recorded his fifth shutout of the season, and the Stars clinched their first playoff berth since 2008 with a 3-0 victory against the St.COPENHAGEN - Brent Sutter was speaking to Paul Holmgren over the summer when the topic of Scott Laughton came up and the Philadelphia Flyers general manager noted that the prospect reminded him a bit of Mike Richards. After Thursday, the two players have one more thing in common: both have served as captain of Canadas national junior team. Richards led Canada to gold in the 2005 event when Sutter was also coach. "He wasnt necessarily the best player on the team, but he was the glue of the team," Sutter recalled. Laughton, like Richards a first-round pick of the Flyers, was named captain of this years world junior squad on Friday. Sutter, now back for a third tour of duty behind the bench at the world juniors, informed Laughton of his decision before practice and then announced it to the team at the end of the workout. "Leadership with him comes naturally," said Sutter. "Hes a well-respected player inside our dressing room. He has a lot of charisma to him. He demands respect. He comes to play every night and he plays the right way." Holmgrens Richards comparison stuck with Sutter and has become clearer the more hes been around Laughton. And thats music to the 19-year-olds ears. "Ive looked up to Mike Richards for a while now," said Laughton, who plays for the Oshawa Generals in the Ontario Hockey League. "Hes with the same agent as me and ever since my junior draft year Ive been looking up to him and watching him and hes my favourite player so its a pretty big honour to be [compared] to him." Often times Canadas captain will be a player with previous world junior experience, but there are just three returnees this time around. Jonathan Drouin, an 18-year-old, is the only forward back and was named an alternate captain along witth Minnesota Wild defenceman Mathew Dumba.dddddddddddd The other two returning players are defenceman Griffin Reinhart, who will miss the first three games due to a suspension, and goalie Jake Paterson, who is competing with Zach Fucale for the starting job. With that in mind, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Laughton had a pretty good idea of how hed fit in this year. "Im an older guy with pro experience so I knew I was going to be a leader on this team whether I did get a letter or not," he said. "Im a pretty vocal guy so Im going to continue to do that and also keep the room light and joke around a bit and things like that. Whenever a guy needs me to be there Im going to stick up for my teammates. Thats the biggest thing." Its clear why Laughton was an easy choice for Sutter. The Oakville, Ont. native can do it all. He filled a shutdown role while helping Canada win titles at the under-17 and under-18 levels, but is also dangerous in the offensive end. When he left for Canadas camp a week ago, he was seventh in OHL scoring with 24 goals and 50 points in 29 games. And, of course, hes also got some professional experience. Laughton got a taste of the NHL last season playing five games for the Flyers and then six more for the teams American Hockey League affiliate. "That really benefitted me and was huge for me just in terms of my confidence," he said. Laughton stuck with the Flyers out of training camp this fall, but was sent down early in the campaign without playing a game. "Its definitely disappointing and it always weighs in the back of your mind," Laughton admitted. "Coming back to junior, I tried to use it as motivation and tried to play my heart out and be a leader back in Oshawa and I think Ive done that." ' ' '

TORONTO – It was the kind of save that can change the course of a game and Jonathan Bernier made it in the early moments of an eventual rout of the Canucks. Bernier stopped a season-high 44 shots on Saturday night, but it was the point-blank save on Radim Vrbata with zeroes still on the board in the first frame that propelled the Leafs to their fifth win in seven games (5-1-1). Scoring first is all-important to Toronto – still a perfect 11-0-0 when they manage the games first goal – and thats precisely why the early stop was so critical. The Leafs were stumbling around some in those first moments; they needed a big save and got it. Bernier added another such stop just a minute or so later, turning down Alex Edlers trip from the point into a wide-open slot. Randy Carlyle observed that Bernier saved our butts with the two stops, allowing Torontos second-ranked offensive attack to get in gear en route to a 5-2 win. We found a way to get our offence going, Carlyle said, but I think Bernie was the catalyst for sure. It was one of the finer starts of a season thats been not nearly as impressive as the one that preceded it. Berniers numbers are down across the board in his second season as the Leafs tentative no. 1. Hes not been near the force of last season, nor has he needed to be quite as often. Hes had some early season woes, Carlyle acknowledged. I think he would be the first one to say that he wasnt as sharp as he needed to be. The 26-year-old entered the night with an .897 save percentage in the seven starts that preceded Saturdays sterling effort, yielding five goals for the second time this season in a loss to the Devils on Thursday. But he was locked in against the Canucks, holding them at bay amid a furious pushback in the final 40 minutes, which included a litany of Vancouver power-plays. I think he was the difference, said Korbinian Holzer. …he made the big stops that kept us in [the game] and give us a chance to build up the lead. At the end he was huge again and played an overall great game. Amongst the league-leaders with a .933 save percentage at even-strength last season, Bernier entered Saturdays play with a .921 mark, his effectiveness also dipping slightly on the penalty kill despite fewer shots against. Overall, he boasts a .916 save percentage this season, dipping from the mighty .923 mark he set a year ago. And yet Carlyle has run with him for the better part of two months, allowing the former first round pick to cement himself as the Leafs top dog in goal. Saturday marked his eight consecutive start, matching a career-high. We just felt that we were going to give him the ball here to run with, Carlyle said, noting a light schedule with a majority of home games. That faith was rewarded against Vancouver. Tonight I felt really good, said Bernier. I was seeing the puck well and obviously Ive played these guys quite a bit … I was trying to stay patient tonight and stay on my feet as much as possible. Five Points 1. Four-Line Depth That the Leafs could score five on yet another quiet night for the top line is wholly representative of the improved offensive depth they boast this season. It was the trio of Peter Holland, David Clarkson and Joffrey Lupul supplying much of the attack for Toronto, the fourth line additionally chipping in with a goal from Richard Panik. The 23-year-old Panik was actually late in jumping on the ice just before his goal, the gleeful celebration that followed his beating Ryan Miller indicative of that. I dont know if he was day-dreaming or what he was doing, Carlyle said with a grin, [but] I think thats why he was a little excited, because he was a little embarrassed by what happened. Panik has scored five times now, despite garnering less than nine minutes per game – none of which comes with the man advantage. Hes made a strong bid for more ice-time, doing what he can at this point to earn Carlyles trust. Thats the thing, said Panik. I think the coach doesnt know me that well. But each game Ive got to play a hard game and earn a spot. Everyone earned it in training camp, [but] I didnt have that opportunity. Even if I play five minutes Ive got to play hard and earn that spot in the top-nine. Carlyle called that fourth unit – which also included David Booth and Trevor Smith – difference makers against the Canucks. They werent hemmed in our end, he said. And interestingly enough, he noted his growing comfort with the line, feeling no fear in situations where they might be stuck on the ice versus an opposing teams top line – such as on an icing. Thats where, at this stage with those players, we dont really have to worry as we had to before, Carlyle said. The Leafs boast 11 players with at least four goals. 2. Stepping Up Torontos penalty kill has taken a couple of key personnel hits in the past couple weeks, first losing Roman Polak to a knee injury and then Leo Komarov to a concussion. Their absence had been felt prior a perfect showing against the Canucks. The Leafs had allowed a power-play goal in three of the previous four games, but on Saturday they stuffed Vancouver entirely in six attempts. Daniel Winnik played more than eight minutes in such duty, Dion Phaneuf and Cody Franson adding more than seven minutes apiece on the blue-line. Bernier, meanwhile, was perfect with the 10 shots he faced. Our PK guys did a heck of a job for us and our goalie was outstanding, Carlyle said. 3. Surge The luck factor has certainly changed for Joffrey Lupul since he returned from a broken right hand late last month. Despite strong underlying numbers, Lupul had just a pair of goals and three points in the nine games before he was hurt, dubbing it one of the toughest stretches of luck hed ever had. I think I was hitting posts or cross-bars every game, he said. Lupul has conversely managed four goals and seven points in five games upon return, chasing Miller with the fourth Toronto goal on Saturday. Earlier in the year I had some really tough luck, Lupul said Saturday morning. I thought I had a lot of opportunities that normally wouldve went in. So I was quite happy with the way I was playing earlier in the year and now Ive come back and I think Ive gotten better each game. Two constant keys for the 31-year-old: playing physically and driving hard to the net. Those are the two things I lean on when Im not having success and I cant really figure out why, he said. But the head coach would like to see Lupul simplify things, relying less on individual tactics and the turnovers they tend to cause. When he does that his effectiveness drops, Carlyle said. Wed like to see him be more of a straight line shooter, one who creates offence off the cycle from time to time. Lupul played only 13 minutes against the Canucks, scoring on his only shot while also managing a helper on David Clarksons empty-netter. 4. Rising Stock Indicative of his growing faith in the 24-year-old, Carlyle turned to Nazem Kadri – and linemates, Daniel Winnik and Mike Santorelli – to oppose Vancouvers sturdy top trio of the Sedin twins and Radim Vrbata. And the strategy proved mostly effective. Kadri had a 40 per cent Corsi mark against the Canucks, which looks better when held in view against Vancouvers 91-47 advantage for the game. I thought Nazzie was good defensively, said Carlyle. He didnt play high-risk, high-reward … I thought [that line] did a good job. 5. Concussed Missing his third straight game Saturday, Leo Komarov is no closer to returning from a concussion. Komarov has skated just once since he was hit by Alex Ovechkin one week ago, remaining off the ice entirely otherwise. Given the unpredictability of the injury its unclear when exactly hell return, but next weekend would appear the earliest possible date. Komarov hasnt practiced once since he was concussed and Monday is the earliest he could participate in that first one. One practice wont be enough though in light of the long layoff and since the Leafs play back-to-back on Tuesday and Wednesday, Saturday at home versus Detroit is the most optimistic bet for his return to the lineup. Thats assuming all goes well. Komarov managed to skate briefly on Thursday, but then remained off the ice the following two days. Its entirely possible that he misses another full week, a definite hit for the Leafs given his array of offerings. Bonus Point James Reimer continues to wait for that next start meanwhile. He hasnt made an appearance since Nov. 18 when the Leafs were blasted at home by Nashville. Obviously you want to play right, said Reimer earlier this week. Were born to play and youre born to want to be a difference-maker out there so yeah obviously Im looking forward to my next start and you want to get in there. But at the same time [Berniers] been playing really well and the teams been playing really well so right now my job is to support them and be a great teammate and work hard in practice. Thats what Im trying to do. Reimer will likely draw two of the next four starts. The Leafs play a pair of back-to-backs in the upcoming week, beginning with a Calgary-Detroit set on Tuesday and Wednesday. Stats-Pack .908% – Save percentage for Jonathan Bernier in his last eight starts. 8:47 – Average ice-time for Richard Panik, who has five goals this season. 8:28 – Shorthanded ice-time for Daniel Winnik against Vancouver. 1 – Point in the previous nine games for Peter Holland, who had a pair against the Canucks. 14:13 – Ice-time for Phil Kessel on Saturday. The Ottawa team of Homan, lead Lisa Weagle, second Alison Kreviazuk and third Emma Miskew, defended the Canadian womens curling championship they won last year in Kingston, Ont. At 13-0, they are the first since Linda Moores rink in 1985 to go undefeated at the tournament. Homan took early leads all week and did it again by posting three points in the second end, although Sweeting answered with a hit for two in the third. Sweeting was a tad strong on a raise in the fourth and Homan came around the right side to hit for two. Alberta got one back in the fifth. Canada was in trouble in the sixth when a Sweeting draw left Alberta with three stones near the button, but Homan scattered them with a hit to salvage one point. Sweeting drew for two in the seventh to close the gap to one point, only to see Homan pick off two Sweeting draws to score two in the eighth. A Sweeting bid for a double takeout fell short and the Alberta skip was forced to draw for one in the ninth, handing Homan the hammer and a two-point lead going into the final end. Canada ran them out of rocks to clinch the victory. Prime Minister Stephen Harper witnessed the win from the grandstands at the Maurice Richard Arena. He was wearing a Canadian Olympic team jacket and posing for pictures with fans between ends. "I dont agree with this even being a game. I never have. "The Page (playoff) system builds in a bronze medallist. But, as much as I disagree with the game, its nice to win a game to get there." Carey made two perfect draws to score two in the eighth end for a 4-3 lead. Lawton blanked the ninth and had the hammer going into the final end, but then disaster struck. Second Sherri Singler threw a flash, third Sherry Anderson hit a guard and soon there were five Manitoba stones ringing the button. Lawton tried to sneak in an angled raise with her last shot, but it couldnt get through and Carey got a steal of three. "It was worth a try,"said Lawton. "It was there...I had to stick it right on the nose. I couldnt roll off. But it was a bit too hard. We didnt leave ourselves in a great position to score one that end. "It would have been nice to finish with a medal, but Im proud of our girls. It was a great tournament for us. Its unfortunate how it ended." The winning team splits $25,500 and gets gold rings with a diamond, while the silver medallists get $15,500 plus a gold ring with a ruby. Careys squad gets $12,000 and a gold ring with an emerald. Because of her repeat win, the Homan teams diamonds will be twice the size of last year. Lawtons side gets $7,000. All 12 teams get $4,167 for wearing title sponsor crests. VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver Whitecaps have cleared many hurdles in their four Major League Soccer seasons. One hedge that has continually tripped them up is playing the L.A. Galaxy on the road. Vancouver has never beaten the Galaxy at StubHub Center, where they have lost four times and been outscored 10-1. "Thanks for reminding me," coach Carl Robinson said with a grin this week after his team practised at the University of British Columbia. "Its got to change at some stage." The Whitecaps (2-1-2) are aware of the challenge they face when they play the Galaxy (1-1-1) Saturday in Carson, Calif. The team is packing a sense of confidence for the road trip. The Whitecaps have managed a win and tie against the Galaxy at B.C. Place Stadium. Saturdays game is another chance to measure themselves against one of MLSs perennial powerhouses. "Both sides have good competitors," said Vancouver captain Jay DeMerit. "Them being one of the better teams its a time for us to raise our game and really test ourselves and see how good we are. "That creates that battle sense." The Whitecaps are coming off their first defeat of the season, a 2-1 home loss to the Colorado Rapids last week. Vancouver led 1-0 but, playing one man down, gave up two goals in as many minutes to Rapids midfielder Jose Mari. "Those things happen and you move on," said DeMerit. "Knowing the calibre of team we are up against this weekend, that should excite us. That should take our focus and make sure we are preparing right. If we do the right things we can beat anyone in this league." The Whitecaps will be without midfielder Matias Laba who is suspended after picking up two yellow cards against Colorado. He could be replaced by Nigel Reo-Coker who missed two games after tripping over a bike rack and bashing his head. The 29-year-old from London was back practising with the team this week sporting an ugly scar on his head and a desire to get back on the pitch. "Im excited," said Reo-Coker, who started the first three games of the season. "When you sit out and watch one or two games its not nice. "Im someone who is used to competing." DeMerit said Reo-Coker makes the Whitecaps more abrasive. "Nigel brings a grit, he brings competitiveness, he brings a toughness in the tackle," he said. "He can really help us going forward when he gets the ball at this feet and drives at the defence." The Whitecaps have been a tale of two teams this year. Both their wins have come at home where they have outscored their opponents 7-4 in three matches. On the road Vancouver has managed two draws and just one goal. Robinson relishes the challenge the Galaxy present. "Were a young evolving team," said the first-year head coach. "It will be a good test to see where we are. "Its important we go on the road and try and dictate what we can, control ourselves, deal with them attacking wisely but putting a focus on us attacking." The Galaxy won their first match of the season with a 3-0 defeat of Chivas USA last week. Captain Robbie Keane scored his second goal of the season in the match. Keane has 36 goals and 22 assists in 58 MLS games since joining the Galaxy in 2011. Forward Landon Donovan needs just one goal to reach 135. That would make him the MLS all-time regular-season leader in goals scored. Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted said he doesnt want to be the answer to a trivia question. "It would be nice not to be that guy," said Ousted. "I am trying to keep a clean sheet so it doesnt matter who scores." Donovan has scored four goals against the Whitecaps, the most of any L.A. player. Keane and Donovan combine for a dangerous one-two punch, but defender Andy OBrien said its dangerous to focus on them because the Galaxy have plenty of other players able to deliver a knockout blow. "If you emphasize on Keane there are 11 players on the pitch," said OBrien, who has been a teammate with Keane on the Irish national team. "Not only does Robbie score goals he creates goals. "We need to close him down. He is one of a number of players theyve got that can score goals. From a defensive prospective you try to make life difficult for him and stick to it." DeMerit agreed the Whitecaps cant become too focused on just two Galaxy players. "One of their best qualities is they have a lot of interchangeable parts," he said. "You will see guys on the left end up on the right and guys in the centre on the left. "Guys have to make sure they are sticking with their jobs and their spots on the field. They are going to try to get us moving and change around. Defensively we need to be wary of that and get help from all 11 (players) defensively, not just the back four." Robert Jones Jersey Retro . Hoyer shrugged and got ready to fight for his job. "It was almost a sense of relief when he was drafted," he said, "because I knew exactly right then and there what it was going to be." Its going to be a quarterback battle unlike anything Cleveland has seen before. Hoyer, the hometown kid and incumbent starter, and Manziel — the college football superstar with the larger-than-life persona, catchy nickname and Heisman Trophy — were on the field together Wednesday, the second day of organized team activities. With roughly 60 media members lining the fields and focused on the two QBs every move, Hoyer and Manziel went through passing drills and took turns behind centre in a competition expected to last several months. Afterward, Hoyer said he and Manziel are developing a "working relationship" and joked the pair are getting along splendidly. "I was thinking about sending him a birthday card," Hoyer quipped. Hoyer, though, understands what under first-year coach Mike Pettine meant about the quarterback competition being somewhat heated. "I totally get it," he said. "I dont think were in there not being friendly. But when youre gunning for the same job, there is a little bit of an edge to it." The Browns are expecting Manziel to challenge Hoyer, who is coming off right knee surgery. The team has made it clear that Hoyer is the starter and will remain so unless Manziel can beat him out. This is nothing new to Hoyer, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament last season. Hoyer has been battling for a job since he joined the NFL, only this time hes the one that others are gunning for. "It does feel different because as of right now Im the top guy, and before Ive always been coming from behind," Hoyer said. "My mentality has never really changed." Manziel did not speak to reporters after practice, but several Browns players were asked about their famous new teammate, the scrambling magician known as Johnny Football. The former Texas A&M star fell in the first round before Cleveland traded up to take him with the No. 22 overall pick. So far, Manziel has kept his head buried in his playbook. "Johnny has done a good job of being a rookie, keeping his mouth shut,&quuot; Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas said.dddddddddddd "Rookies are supposed to be seen and not heard, which is what hes done." Hoyer waited four seasons for his chance to start. After spending three years in New England as Tom Bradys backup, he made one start in Arizona before he bounced around and signed as a free agent with Cleveland last May. Hoyer was prepared for the Browns to draft a quarterback. He never expected to be handed anything, and not once did he consider asking for a trade. "No, never," he said. "I knew, even going back to last summer, that this was the place that I wanted to be, and it ended up working out and I got back here, and then I got a chance to play. This is my hometown. This is where my familys from. This is where I want to make a difference. Ill never shy away from competition, and its something I had prepared myself for." Hoyer and Manziel each had good moments during the nearly two-hour workout, which Pettine kept open to the media after limiting access for last weeks rookie minicamp. Hoyer, wearing a knee brace but moving without any problems, made the days best pass, completing a long touchdown to wide receiver Conner Vernon. Manziels final pass got batted down, but he showed some of the moves that made him a household name. Still, hes got work to do. "Its just like any other rookie, that hes just inconsistent," Pettine said. "A lot of its the mental part of it. Hes more worrying about getting the formation right, making sure the motions correct and hes got the cadence. Then hes got to worry about where guys are. Once all that stuff becomes second nature a little bit, hell be a lot more comfortable. "He flashed some things that made him kind of who he is, the ability to make plays on his feet." NOTES: Pro Bowl WR Josh Gordon practiced as he awaits a possible league suspension. Gordon declined comment. ... WR Miles Austin said he called former Browns QB Bernie Kosar to ask for permission to wear No. 19. "I never wanted to step on anyones toes," Austin said. "I thought it was the right thing to do." ... Pettine would not discuss injuries to several players, including starting DT Ahtyba Rubin, who was not on the field. ... OG Garrett Gilkey exchanged a few punches with rookie DT Calvin Barnett, whose helmet was ripped off during the fracas. ' ' '

Do you think this new theory in the NHL that goalies dont play in back to back games is ridiculous?Grant Fuhr: I wouldnt day ridiculous, but I dont see a reason why they couldnt play back-to-back. I mean, I dont think its hard to play back-to-back, you have to dress anyway.DB: 1984 Edmonton Oilers reunion a couple weeks ago? Were there any old teammates that you didnt recognize?GF: There wasnt anyone that I didnt recognize, but weve all gotten a little older obviously. There were definitely a few less heads of hair there, but the guys are all still the same guys.DB: Which one of those guys from the 84 team can give you the best run on the golf course?GF: Um, Gretzky is a pretty good player, I think Mess still plays pretty well, so there are a few guys that are decent players. Congratulations on the great 30 year reunion ???? they will always have the greatest bond brothers forever A photo posted by @janetgretzky on Oct 10, 2014 at 5:50pm PDT DB: Gretzky has referred to you in interviews as the finest goalie hes ever seen. Is that something he ever told you in person, or did you hear it through the media the first time?GF: Obviously, its a great honour to have him say that. But as teammates you just have fun playing against each other every day. I mean, I feel lucky that I got to play with him for so many years and I got to play against him for a couple years. So, we had a lot of fun that way.DB: So, Im sure youd refer to him as one of the best players you ever played with…GF: Oh, easily by far! Even growing up.DB: If you guys were to reverse roles, back in lets just say 86, you get 10 shots on Gretzky in net, how many times do you score on him?GF: Thats a good question (laughs), Im hoping maybe 6 or 7. (Steve Babineau/Getty Images)DB: Something I always notice when watching old games is the goalie equipment. I mean, it was so small youre almost concerned for the goalies safety…GF: Ya, we werent very big back then!DB: Which goalie today would you say would be the best goalie if they played back in the 80s with those small pads? Because it definitely takes a little bit of a different skill set.GF: Marty Brodeur would probably be the best suited, just because hes worn smaller equipment all through his career and hes more of a stand-up goalie.DB: Who would you say is the best "big game" goaltender in the game today?GF: Hmm, thats another tough one. Probably, (thinking) I like Henrik Lundqvist right now, I think hes probably one of the best in the game, but you gotta look at what Jonathan Quicks done the last couple of years. Each year someone seems to stand out, Carey Price I like a lot, so a lot of guys are stepping up now.DB: I just want to talk to you about this picture here. Were you here? What is going on?GF: (Laughs) Ya, I was around then. Im not sure what Mess is wearing there (laughs). All Im gonna say is, thats old time hockey. We were allowed to have a little fun back then.DB: So, goalie masks these days are a lot more intricate now then they ever were in the past….GF: Ya, the paint jobs are a little more high end now.DB: Im going to ask you to get a little creative here and lets try to build what your mask would look like nowadays. Here are some examples, first up is Rangers goalie Cedrick Desjardins with the Sinatra/Jeter mask. (ingoalmag.com)DB: Ducks goalie Frederik Andersen has a "Reservoir Ducks" mask. Watch out... (ingoalmag.com)DB: So, what kind of pop culture reference would be featured on your mask, maybe something from a movie or a band?GF: I dont know if Id put a band on there, but Im a big horror movie fan. So, I think a collection of the different guys from different horror movies would be cool. Ya, Id like that.DB: Would you get an old goalie on there, someone you looked up to growing up?GF: Ya, Id probably have a little Glenn Hall, a little Tony Esposito.DB: Are guys going bardown on you the worst feeling as a goalie? Or is there a worse type of goal?GF: Well, all goals feel crappy. But its not something we worried about much when I played because we didnt go down as much. But now when you watch hockey you see the goalies go down a lot more, so you see a lot more goals going in over top their shoulders. (thebearrocks.com)DB: So, lets talk about this amazing mo-fro you got here.GF: Yes, that was a nice look.DB: Do you feel you had the most underrated mo-fro combo in professional sports at the time?GF: That is actually a short version of it, so around that that time I probably had at least the most hair out of anybody.DB: Can you BarDown?GF: I might be able to?Again, if youre interested in purchasing Fuhrs book, Grant Fuhr: The Story Of A Hockey Legend, you can do so HERE. It seems not only is Pendrel one of the worlds best mountain bikers, but one of the most generous as well. The 33-year-old from Kamloops, B.C., led Canada to a 1-2 finish in cross-country mountain biking at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday, taking the lead from the opening lap and never looking back. Pendrel absolutely crushed the field to cross in one hour 39 minutes 29 seconds, a minute and 10 seconds ahead of silver medallist Emily Batty of Brooklin, Ont. Australias Rebecca Henderson was third. Max Plaxton of Victoria was fourth in the mens race. "Everyone whos watched me race knows I just like to go hard from the start. . . When you get some space between you and other riders, you just go for it," Pendrel said. "It feels amazing to win the gold for Canada." The reigning world champion decided this year to decline Sport Canadas funding -- the $1,500 a month she would normally receive as part of the athlete carding system. The money was split into three development cards of $500 apiece. Gagne told Pendrel he thought he was one of the three recipients. "That was really cool to feel like I was helping one of those guys," Pendrel said. "I felt that it could make a bigger impact in one of the up-and-coming riders life," she added, pointing out that she is a semipro athlete -- she rides for Luna Pro Team. "I just knew just how big it was to receive that carding the first time, not just financially but emotionally, to know that youve reached that level where your country wants to invest in you. And thats really special. "I wanted another athlete to have that experience." Gagne finished seventh in the mens race Tuesday, and praised Pendrel for her gesture. "Catharine did that so thats really generous from her," he said. "That opens up other spots for younger athletes like me so obviously thats super cool from her." The last time many Canadians saw Pendrel was at the 2012 London Olympics where she went in as a favourite but faded to ninth, tearfully apologizing to fans back home. The two-time world champion said the disappointment of that performance stung for some time. "But what it comes down to: I didnt have a good day. Theres so much more to look forward to and opportunities to do well for Canada," she added -- particularly, next summers Pan American Games in Toronto and the 2016 Rio Olympics. "I got sso much positive feedback that I realized, even a bad day for me can still be inspiring, and Ill just keep inspiring people to ride their bike and to reach for big goals, and not be afraid to risk failing to be incredible.dddddddddddd" On Tuesday, Pendrel, wearing earrings made from links of a bike chain -- a gift from a young girl from New Brunswick -- led from the outset. She was already more than a minute ahead after the first lap of the 31.95-kilometre course that twisted and turned around Cathkin Braes Country Park. A coach handed her a Canadian flag near the finish line, and she waved it as she crossed for gold, keeping intact a gold-medal streak for Canadian women. Canadas Chrissy Redden won the title in 2002 in Manchester, England, where the sport made its Commonwealth debut, and Marie-Helene Premont took the title in 2006 in Melbourne, Australia. There was no mountain bike four years ago at the Games in New Delhi, India. "I was trying to ignore the fact that Canada has never not gotten gold in mountain bike at the Commonwealth Games," Pendrel said, laughing. "I really didnt want that pressure before coming into this, but I knew with how quick Emily was going as well, that we had a strong chance." The 26-year-old Batty battled Henderson for the entire race until the Canadian pulled away on the final lap. "I was feeling strong, I knew Catharine was up the road and I knew it as going to be hard to catch her," Batty said. "I came here for gold, but silver is the next best thing." Batty, who narrowly lost to Pendrel at the recent Canadian championships, said shes benefited from the tradition of strong female mountain bikers in Canada. "It really helps. Weve always been a top-ranked country for the womens cross-country mountain biking and it puts the bar really high for our development program and it is really inspiring," she said. "Not long ago I was looking up to the top Canadian women and now being one is really inspiring. "I just gave myself goosebumps saying that," she added, laughing. "We really feed off each other, and push each other." Hundreds of fans turned out to watch the mountain bike racing, despite dark clouds, periodic rain and blustery winds. The riders had to negotiate a tricky course that featured the Brig ODoom, Broken Biscuits, and Clyde Climb -- all named by local schoolchildren. Anton Cooper of New Zealand won the mens 37.15-kilometre race, followed by teammate Samuel Gaze. Daniel McConnell of Australia won the bronze. ' ' '

Landover, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Tony Romo had a pair of touchdown passes to Dez Bryant as the Dallas Cowboys pounded the Washington Redskins, 44-17, in the final game of the regular season. Dallas came into the game having already secured its first NFC East crown since 2009. With the win, the team has a chance to secure a first-round bye, and possibly even the top spot in the NFC. Should the Green Bay/Detroit game end in a tie, with either an Arizona loss or a Seattle win, the Cowboys will find themselves atop the NFC. Also, losses from Arizona and Seattle will give the team a first-round bye. Our job was to take care of what needed taking care of, said Dallas head coach Jason Garrett. Thats what we did. We practiced right all week and I thought we played the right way today. Romo finished the game 22-for-34 for 299 yards with an interception, and DeMarco Murray set a franchise record for rushing yards in a season for the Cowboys (12-4), who won their final four games of the season to post their best mark since a 13-3 finish in 2007. Im playing at a level Im proud of and hope to get better, said Romo. Im just excited about the progression of improvement and want to keep this going in our next game. Murray, who totaled 100 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, finished the regular season with an NFL-best 1,845 yards to surpass Emmitt Smiths single- season mark of 1,773 yards in 1995. Robert Griffin III finished off a lackluster season with 336 yards and a touchdown along with two interceptions on 27-of-41 attempts for the Redskins (4-12), who finished last in the division for a second straight year. As a player, you always have to know who you are, said Griffin. I know who I am and what I need to get better at. We get to play this game and have an opportunity to play this game, its a blessing. The Cowboys started the game with the ball and put points on the board as Dan Bailey hit a 36-yard field goal to give the team a 3-0 lead just under four minutes in. Jason Witten caught a pair of passes for 25 yards on the drive. Each team then exchanged long touchdowns, with the Redskins scoring after DeSean Jackson caught a short pass out to the left and getting a nice block on his way to a 69-yard score. It was the first opening drive touchdown for Washington in 13 games. Four plays later, Bryant caught a short pass out to the left and made a move past the initial defender and raced down the sideline, stiff-arming another tackler near the end zone on his way to a 65-yard score. After a three-and-out, the Cowboys put more points on the board when Romo went deep to the left corner of the end zone and Bryant made a leaping grab for a 23-yard score. The play was initially ruled incomplete, but a review showed that Bryant held the ball and got both feet on the ground before going out of bounds. On the play before the score, Murray took a carry for 32 yards to break Smiths single-season rushing record. Getting the ball back after another three-and-out from the Redskins, the Cowboys got a 32-yard field goal from Bailey for a 20-7 lead, and quickly got the ball back as they recovered a surprise onside kick attempt. The short field enabled Dallas to take a 20-point lead, as Murray broke a couple of tackles on his way to a 9-yard score with 8:10 to play in the first half. Washington came back with a nearly seven-minute drive that got the team into the red zone, but came away with just a 25-yard field goal from Kai Forbath to make it a 27-10 game going into the break. After a scoreless third quarter, the Redskins were able to make it a 10-point game with 6:45 to play as Griffin ran the ball in for a 2-yard score to cap a 10-play, 58-yard drive. The Cowboys, though, came back with a 61-yard drive capped on a Bailey 23-yard field goal with 3:31 to play to put the game out of reach. Griffin fumbled the ball two plays later, with Anthony Spencer taking it in from five yards out, and Joseph Randles 65-yard touchdown run with 1:40 to play turned the game into a rout. Game Notes Bryant set the franchise record for touchdown receptions in a season with 16, passing Terrell Owens mark of 15 set in 2007 ... Dallas went 8-0 on the road this season ... Recalled Tuesday from Double-A Mobile, Anderson (1-0) hadnt seen any action until Sunday and he made his first big league appearance count, at one point retiring 12 consecutive batters. He allowed one run and only two hits in 5 1-3 innings while striking out six, helping Arizona win for the fourth time in five games and secure its third consecutive series for the first time since June 2012. Anderson, 26, was Arizonas ninth-round selection in the 2009 draft and made it to Triple-A last season before going back to Double-A this year, where he was 4-2 with an 0.69 ERA. Brad Ziegler threw a perfect eighth to extend his scoreless-outings streak to 18 over 17 1-3 innings. Anderson was backed by homers from Parra and Montero. Parras fifth-inning drive off Hector Noesi (0-3) gave Arizona a 3-0 lead, and Monteros with one out in the ninth off Frank Francisco pushed the Diamondbacks advantage to 5-1. Parra also started the game with a triple before scoring, extending his streak of getting on base to 18 games. Montero reached five times with two hits, two walks and getting hit by a pitch. That was more support than the White Sox gave Noesi. Moises Sierras solo homer in the sixth got Chicago on the scoreboard, but an offence that had scored 30 runs over the last five games only mustered four hits. Noesi was solid but needed more help, going six innings and allowing three runs and eight hits while throwing 117 pitches. Noesi also fell behind 1-0 in the first thanks in part to shaky defence. Parra led off the game with what appeared to be a routine fly to centre, but Alejandro&nbssp;De Aza misjudged it and stumbled before missing the ball, allowing Parra to get to third on what was ruled a triple.dddddddddddd Martin Prados sharp single to right then drove in Parra to give the Diamondbacks an early lead. Jose Abreu was the White Soxs designated hitter for the third straight day because of a sore left ankle. Parra then gave the Diamondbacks a 3-0 lead with one out in the fifth on his fourth home run of the season. A.J. Pollock led off with a single, and after Cliff Pennington popped out, Parra lined a Noesi delivery into the right-field bullpen. Following Abreus single, Anderson retired 12 straight until Sierras homer with one out in the sixth cut the Diamondbacks lead to 3-1. Moulson scored the first and last goals of the game, and his marker that redirected off his skate with 7:29 left proved to be the decider for the Sabres, who have won two straight games. Tyler Ennis collected three assists, including one on both of Moulsons goals. Zemgus Girgensons tallied a goal and an assist and Marcus Foligno also lit the lamp for Buffalo. Jhonas Enroth earned the win with 42 saves. Despite outshooting Buffalo 45-19, Calgary was on the wrong end of the final score. Mark Giordano, David Jones and Sean Monahan all scored for the Flames, who have lost three in a row for the first time this season. Karri Ramo made 15 saves on only 19 shots in the loss. Just over three minutes into the final period, the Flames took their first lead of the game. Joe Colborne circled the net on a rush, and he passed the puck back across the crease to a crashing Monahan, who tapped the puck by Enroth. It did not take long for the Sabres to respond. Four minutes later, Moulson whiffed on a Ennis backhand pass from behind the net, but Girgensons was in the right place at the right time and wristed the puck past Ramo to even the score. The Sabres went up by a goal with 7:29 remaining. Ennis fired a shot from long disstance and the puck deflected off Moulsons skate into the back of the net.dddddddddddd With six seconds left, the Flames nearly sent the game into overtime, but Enroth made a tough save on Curtis Glencross backhand shot in the slot to preserve the win. In the second period, the Sabres broke the scoreless tie. Ennis knocked T.J. Brodie off the puck in the corner and Moulson took the Ennis pass, beating Ramo for the 1-0 Sabres lead. Minutes later, the Flames took advantage of a 5-on-3 situation. Dennis Wideman set up Giordano for a one-time blast that went off the post and past Enroth to tie the game. Three minutes after Calgary tied the game, the Sabres scored again. Drew Staffords puck control behind the net got the attention of Calgarys defense, and his pass through the crease found an open Foligno, who found the back of the wide-open net. Jones beat Josh Georges to a loose puck in front of Enroth and his shot beat Enroth to tie the game at 2-2 with 2:54 remaining in the second. Game Notes Giordano has two goals and four assists in his six-game point streak ... Calgary had a +22 goal differential in the third period entering the game ... This was the 100th all-time meeting between these franchises, and Buffalo owns a 49-34-17 edge ... Enroth played in his 100th NHL game ... These teams will meet again in Calgary on Jan 27. ' ' '

RIO DE JANEIRO - As England endures its worst World Cup for more than 50 years, Wayne Rooney wants his teammates to remember the pain of this debacle. Less than a week into its Brazil campaign, England is already out of contention after losses to Italy and Uruguay. Not since 1958 had England failed to make it to the second round of a World Cup it qualified for. "Its vital we take the pain we are feeling now and remember that and the next tournament we dont want to feel that again," Rooney said Saturday. "Obviously we are hurting," the striker added. "We are really disappointed to be out of the tournament. I am sure you can imagine its quite tough, a long few days for us." The players will sign off with a Group D finale against surprise leader Costa Rica on Tuesday when Rooney wants the teams pride restored. "These next few days will be tough, but we have to be strong together as a team," Rooney said. "We have to make sure we are positive for the next game." For goalkeeper Joe Hart, Englands 2-1 losses in Brazil are his worst moments in football. "Its a strange empty feeling," Hart said. "This is ultimately really cruel and gutting for me." Roy Hodgson is set to remain in charge going forward, with the Football Association asking the coach to see out his contract to the 2016 European Championship. And Rooney can see progress under Hodgson, who took charge before Euro 2012. "He has brought a great enthusiasm to the team ... Roy is the man to take us forward," Rooney said. LOS ANGELES -- Make no bones about it. Coach Mike DAntonis skeleton roster was no match for the opportunistic Charlotte Bobcats and Al Jeffersons dominating presence in the paint. Jefferson tied a career high with 40 points, 16 of them in the fourth quarter, and grabbed 18 rebounds to help the Bobcats send the floundering Los Angeles Lakers to their sixth straight defeat with a 110-100 victory Friday night. "I have those moments," Jefferson said. "They kept running plays for me and I kept scoring. In the first quarter, they werent going down for me, but I just kept staying with it because I knew sooner or later it would start going down for me. " Jefferson set a franchise record with his 11th straight game of 20 or more points, eclipsing the mark set by Jason Richardson in 2007-08. It was the 13th game this season in which an opposing player scored at least 30 against the Lakers, something that happened in 18 games last season -- and there are still 35 games remaining. Jefferson is averaging 19.9 points and 10.7 boards, but wasnt selected for the All-Star game and has yet to play in one in his 10 years in the league. "Ive been disappointed with the All-Star games, man, for many years. So I dont listen to the hype," Jefferson said. Gerald Henderson added 20 points for the Bobcats. Starting point guard Kemba Walker missed his sixth straight game since a sprained left ankle ended his career-opening consecutive game streak of 190. Ramon Sessions, who has started every game at the point during Walkers absence, had 13 assists and nine points. Sessions, along with starting power forward Josh McRoberts and reserve guard Jannero Pargo -- all former Lakers -- combined for 26 points and the Bobcats snapped a string of five straight defeats against Los Angeles. Charlotte shot 52.3 per cent from the field, improving to 5-0 when shooting at least 50 per cent. The victory was the Bobcats ninth on the road, four more than all of last season. Still missing Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Jordan Farmar and Xavier Henry because of injuries, the Lakers lost for the 18th time in 21 games and are only a half-game ahead of last-place Sacramento in the Western Conference standings just four seasons after winning their 16th NBA title. Pau Gasol had 24 points for Los Angeles and Nick Young added 21 off the bench. The Lakers have given up 100 or more points in 14 consecutive games, matching the clubs longest such streak since a 17-game stretch in 1986-87. Trailing by as many as 20 points after a pair of free throws by Jefferson with 4:21 left in the third quarter, the Lakers sliced the margin to 86-73 on a four-point play by Ryan Kelly. Los Angeles got it down to 86-78 on a layup by Robert Sacre with 11:01 to play, but that was as close as the Lakers got. Jefferson scored the Bobcats first eight points of the final quarter to help keep the Lakers at bay. "Hes been doing this to a lot of people," DAntoni said. "We tried a little bit of everything. We dug. We tried to play him a little bit straight up, at first. We tried to double-team him." Jefferson, who signed a three-year, $41 million contract with the Bobcats in July, powered them to a 62-49 halftime lead with 18 points and eight rebounds. Charlotte shot 58 per cent in the half, and never trailed after Jeffersons finger roll gave the Bobcats a 26-25 lead with 1:37 left in the first quarter. In the other meeting this season, the Lakers beat the Bobcats 88-85 at Charlotte with a game-ending 13-4 run and 21 points by Kobe Bryant -- one of only six games the NBAs fourth leading scorer has played in this season because of a torn Achilles tendon and a fracture in his left knee. Jefferson was held to 14 points that night. NOTES: The game ball was being sent to New York to mark the final day of NBA Commissioner David Sterns tenure. STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Down at halftime, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo threatened to really leave his listless team behind -- as in an extra night on the road in Happy Valley. "I told them we were staying here New Years," Izzo said. "Everythings closed down here. It would have been a good place to keep them." Truth is, the Spartans were getting on their plane no matter the outcome, and it was only a matter of time before they got rolling against overmatched Penn State. Branden Dawson scored 20 points, Keith Appling had 14 and No. 5 Michigan State clamped down on defence in the second half to beat Penn State 79-63 on Tuesday night. Gary Harris added 13 points and Travis Trice had 12 for the Spartans (12-1, 1-0) in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Dawson keyed a second-half charge to help the Spartans rally from a halftime deficit and win their fifth straight game. "Our halftime wasnt a lot of fun," Izzo said. "What you always hope is that players respond." Did they ever. The Spartans were in total control in the second half, and hit 10 of 20 3-pointers overall to turn this one into a rout. They limited Penn State to 16 points on 5-of-20 shooting in the second half, a sure sign theres a still a huge gap between the programs. "Thats what their team has got to do now, its got to grow," Izzo said. Brandon Taylor had 18 points for the Nittany Lions (9-5, 0-1) and D.J. Newbill scored 17. Newbill had three 3s and 14 points in the first half to keep the upset bid alive. But a second-half shooting funk for the Nittany Lions cost them against the preseason conference favourite. Penn State failed to have an assist in the second half and made only 2 of 9 3-point attempts. "I think we let missing shots dictate our effort," coach Pat Chambers said. "Its unfortunate, because the team I envisioned played in the first half." The Spartans needed Harris to drive the offence and squash Penn States surprising seven-point halftime lead. Harris, the preseason Big Ten player of the year, scored five quick points to open the second half and put the Spartans ahead. But he went to the bench with his third foul only 3 1/2 minutes into the half, leaving the Spartans without their second-leading scorer for a spell. It didnt matter who was in the game for the Spartans, the Nittany Lions kept making 3s as if they were layups. Tim Frazier tied it at 52-all on Penn States eighth 3 (on 14 attempts) -- a stout number after the team missed nine of 11 attempts in the last game against Mount St. Marys. Appling, though, sparked Michigan States long-range game with consecutive 3s for a seven-point lead. Dawson got the job done inside, scoring eight straight points on three layups and two free throws, for a 68-55 lead, all but ending Penn States upset hopes. The Nittany Lions went cold from outside, and Michigan State used 3s and second-chance points off a whopping rebounding edge (45-26). "We all rallied together as a team," Dawson said. Izzo tied Indianas Branch McCracken for fifth place on the Big Ten career wins list with 210. Penn State had its best non-conference record in five seasons and played for 20 minutes like a team capable of kicking off conference play with a shocker. "We know were a good team," Newbill said. "Weve got to become a great team." The Nittany Lions sure were great in the first half, making their 36-per cent 3-point shooting number worthless, hitting one after another to race to a 12-point lead. Newbill made a 3, then followed with a four-point play on the next possession for a 17-9 lead. Taylor hit consecutive 3s for a 25-14 lead that had a small, yet wildly enthusiastic, crowd on their feet. Michigan State appeared to establish its dominance with a 12-0 run to take the lead until Penn State got hot again from 3-point range. Donovan Jack hit PSUs sixth 3 of the half for a 32-29 lead and Newbills third 3 of the half helped the Nittany Lions take a 47-40 lead. The Nittany Lions connected on seven of 12 3-pointers in the half. "They jumped on us," Trice said. "They had a game plan how they wanted to defend us and they executed." Both programs had bigger concerns than the Big Ten opener: No. 4 Michigan State was in Pasadena, Calif., prepping for No. 5 Stanford in the Rose Bowl and the Nittany Lions are in limbo as Bill OBrien decides if he wants to stay loyal to his team or bolt for the NFL. SAN ANTONIO - Too big. Too strong. Too fast. Baylor was too much of just about everything for Creighton and Doug McDermott to handle. And because of it, the sixth-seeded Bears are rolling out of Texas toward California and the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 after an impressive 85-55 win Sunday night in the West Regional. Isaiah Austin and Canadian Brady Heslip each scored 17 points and Baylor used suffocating defence to shut down McDermott, ending the career of one of college basketballs most prolific scorers. "We did a good job making it tough on him," Bears coach Scott Drew said. McDermott, who averaged 27 points this season, finished with 15 but had just three in the first half as Baylor built a 20-point lead. McDermott ranks fifth on the NCAA career scoring list with 3,150 points. Baylor (26-11) had five players score in double figures and shot 64 per cent in one of the dominant performances of the tournament. The rest of the West bracket may want to pay attention to this one. A team that looked like a wreck six weeks ago with a 2-8 start in the Big 12 is brimming with confidence to match all that muscle in the lineup. "We take pride in people hating on us, and we love proving people wrong," Austin said. "Everybody has bought into the one goal that we have in mind and that is winning a national championship." Baylor plays No. 2 seed Wisconsin on Thursday in Anaheim. In Baylors two previous trips to the Sweet 16, it fell one game short of the Final Four. McDermott carried the Bluejays back to the round of 32 for the third year in a row, and had done it in spectacular style, leading the nation in scoring with a sublime shooting touch and uncanny knack to slither his way through defenders for layups and putback baskets. McDermott spurned the chance to turn pro after last season, and this was the year the Bluejays and their senior-laden lineup were expected to drive Creighton farther into the NCAA tournament than any Bluejays team before them. But Baylors defence gave him nothing: neither space to shoot nor even chances for his teammates to pass him the ball. And for all the talk about Creightons maturity and bonding, Baylor made the Bluejays look small and slow. "This is the worst weve played all season, and it just stinks that its the last one. But that doesnt take away from all my memories here. Its tough to go out this way," McDermott said. Baylor came out blazing from long range, knocking down five 3-pointers in the first 7 minutes. Kenny Chery of Montreal made three and when Heslip, who was 0 for 6 in Fridays win over Nebraska, swished his first against Creighton, he mockingly shook the fingers on both hands as he loped back down the court. "We were just expecting it to be a fight, to be honest," said Heslip, whos from Burlington, Ont. McDermott, meanwhile, struggled to find any kind of space inside or out against Baylors zone defence and badly misfired on his first attempt, a baseline shot that missed everything. This rout was just beginning. The Bears flexed their muscle early and often with a lineup built for the rigours of the Big 12. Austin is 7-foot-1 and he teamed with 6-10 forward Cory Jefferson in the frontcourt. When Creighton missed a shot, the typical result was three Bears under the basket with no Bluejays around. Baylors bench was just as intimidating. When reserve forward Rico Gathers pushed his 6-foot-8, 270-pound frame through the lane for a layup, two Creighton defenders were powerless to stop him. By the time Baylor had built a 20-point halftime lead, McDermott had taken only three shots, made one and had two fouls. "We knew we had them on their heels," Austin said. "We wanted to step on their throat." Even when Creighton got a spark — Ethan Wragge made two 3-pointers early in the second half — Baylor simply matched basket for basket, denying any hopes of a rally. Soon it was showtime as Baylors lead kept growing. Jefferson slammed down an alley-oop dunk for a 58-34 lead with just more than 12 minutes to play. Gathers added another rim-rattler a few minutes later, his broad shoulders soaring to the basket to punctuate the night. When McDermott left the game with 2:31 to play, he hugged his father, Creighton coach Greg McDermott, before retreating to the bench and burying his face in a towel. "Im not sure it was Baylor being that good or us being that bad," Greg McDermott said. "Over the course of the season youre going to have a few clunkers. We had one at the wrong time." The playbook will seem like a comic book. Success would be sweet, failure merely a disappointment. The moment he heard his name called in the sixth round of the NFL draft on Saturday, the Montreal native went from being a medical student at McGill University spending 60 hours a week in neonatal intensive care units to an aspiring offensive tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs. You see, in a draft full of intriguing stories, Doc Larry is especially unique. After all, how many 23-year-olds are late to their advisers house to watch the draft because they were helping to deliver twins by emergency C-section? And how many NFL hopefuls have spent their spring working at childrens hospitals, first in the emergency room and later in the NICU, often handling babies that fit comfortably in his massive hands? How many players who heard their names called over the three days of the draft have just one more year of medical school before they can call themselves a doctor? Duvernay-Tardif plans to fit that in during summers, when he is able to take a break from football. But for now, his focus has shifted entirely to the Chiefs. He planned to be in Kansas City this week for rookie orientation, with a three-day rookie minicamp starting May 24. "Thing is that a year ago, my dream was to play in the CFL," said Duvernay-Tardif, who played so well at the East-West Shrine Game that several teams — including the Chiefs — took notice. "At that point, I was like, Oh, damn! I think the NFL is the place for me to play," he said. "Everything went well after that. I was training in the States. I had two visits and hosted my own Pro Day in Montreal and a few teams showed up. Everything went really well for me." Lets be clear about one thing: Theres a good chance that Duvernay-Tardif is a better doctor than he is a football player at this point. The competition in the Canadian Innteruniversity Sport system — which has produced 10 draft picks total — is not exactly the same as the Southeastern Conference.dddddddddddd McGill is not Alabama, having produced one other draft choice — a long-snapper taken by Jacksonville in 2001. Some of the rules of the Canadian game are also a bit different. Then throw in the fact that Doc Larry will be going against players bigger, faster and stronger than ever before, and chances are hell be in for a rude baptism when he finally straps on a Chiefs helmet. "Competition (in Canada) is really a step backward," said Pat Sperduto, the teams area scout, "(but) football is blocking and tackling. Nothing changes there. Its still the same there. You just watch him, you realize that this kid has physical talent." For one thing, he has prototypical size at 6-foot-5, 315 pounds. He also has what Sperduto called a "nasty" streak on the field, which is a bit hard to reconcile with the affable med student who has been spending his time working with sick children. "The potential that he has ahead of him is really good," general manager John Dorsey said. "Now hes going to have to learn, but what he demonstrated at the East-West Game, he actually played at a very high level. He did very well. When you have a player like that — hes got so much more room to grow." The Chiefs lost three players who started along the offensive line on the first day of free agency, and while Kansas City made a few moves to counter the departures, there is still a pressing need for offensive line depth. Duvernay-Tardif could provide some of it. "I think when you play football, you have to play 100 per cent," Duvernay-Tardif said. "When I went to the Shrine game, I said, Lets compete until you hear the whistle, and thats what Im going to do at training camp. And hopefully Im going to be able to compete for a spot." And if things dont work out? He certainly has a fallback plan. ' ' '

Each week, TSN.ca NFL Editors Ben Fisher and Mike Hetherington discuss three hot fantasy football topics. As a fantasy player, are you as concerned with Peyton Manning as some ‘real football’ experts are? Fisher: Yes. I don’t expect Manning’s on the quick path to mediocrity like some doom-and-gloomers, but if you drafted Manning, you did so very early on and expected him to play like a top three quarterback all season long. He simply hasn’t been that, and come playoff time, you can’t have any uncertainties. Now that doesn’t mean I’m going to bench Manning but if you’re team’s success is predicated on Manning scoring 25+ points per game, you may be having some sleepless nights. Hetherington: The Bills defence did a terrific job of limiting Manning last week, but I’m not hitting the panic button just yet. Peyton Manning is still a solid QB1, even against the Chargers improved pass defence this week. At this point in the fantasy season, Manning has taken you this far and – likely - is far and away your best quarterback option. I say stick with Manning, he struggled last week but is still one of the best signal callers in the game and will be eager to restart his touchdown streak. Do you trust Joique Bell as a feature back? Where do you rank him at his position? Fisher: It’s hard not to. Since not playing against the Bills in early October, Bell has averaged more than 13 points per week. And since fully taking over the reins from Reggie Bush he’s been even better. In as good a fantasy offence as the Lions, Bell is right on the cusp of being an RB1 for me. Hetherington: I fully trust Bell as the lead back in the Lions offence, and I’m especially encouraged by his five receptions last week. Bell has taken over the Lions backfield from Reggie Bush and is a must start against the Vikings this week for me. I rank him as a high-end RB2 in an offence that scores points. It’s hard to see him not totaling over 100 yards from scrimmage this week. Would you start Jimmy Graham this week? Fisher: If he played any other position I would seriously consider moving on from him, but the replacement pickings are slim at tight end and with Graham, you always get the promise of his immense talent and impact on a game. Graham isn’t 100%, but he has a favourable matchup against the trainwreck Bears this week. Like Manning, if you drafted Graham your team is built around him scoring you lots of points, so it’ll be an anxious playoff matchup. Hetherington: Graham is clearly not 100 per cent, but at fantasy’s weakest position he’s an absolute must-start. It also doesn’t hurt Graham’s case that he has a long week to gear up for the Bears’ swiss cheese defence on Monday night. If Graham is ever to going to save his disappointing campaign, it will be this week. His upside is worth the risk in an A+ matchup. JK Scott Super Bowl Jersey .
